7mm rem mag
How would a 7mm rem mag do short range and accuracy wise I want one for deer in Tennessee
Im sure it would do ok, but it is geared more toward long range. if you get the right load, it can be a very accurate caliber, I handload my own and actually found what seems to be the best deer load i have shot so far out of it. I was shooting hornady 139 gr sst bullets with 65.5 gr of RL19 powder and i shot ragged 1- hole groups at 100 yards. But if i was shooting short range in heavy cover i would go for something like a 30-30. just my opinion.
Yeah I thought that or 45-70. I killed 1 of my deer with a 6.8 rem spc and it didn't go 30 yards I highly recommend that round I killed a coyote with it dropped him he didn't even wiggle lol I might get that but rounds are heard to find for it
7mag is a great round, but imo unless you are shooting alot of long distance...its definitely overkill for typical whitetail hunting.
Yeah that's what my grandpa said too :/ so I'm thinking about maybe a 30-30 or .308
The 7mm is about too much for deer, I use mine as a combo elk/deer gun which is why i went with the lighter bullet for deer. For close range shots vs. buying shells, 30-30 shells are a heck of alot cheaper than belted mag shells and the 30-30 will perform much better in heavy cover.
Yeah. Now should I do bolt action lever or something else?
have you ever thought about a Marlin lever in .35 remington ? Great combo.
What's short range? Less than 200yds? Less than 100yds?
lots of options, sure a 7mm rem.mag would work, not sure it's the best option. how about a 6.5-284 .270win .308win 7mm-08 |
My 7mm mag is my to to deer gun. Shot two deer this year with it. One at 75 yards, one at 250yds. I hunt he Sandhills of Nebraska so you never know what range you are going to encounter. Any where from point blank to infinitity.
I used 175gr cor loks. It was more than enough for both deer. The 75 yard shot shattered the Deers front leg and shoulder. The 250 yard was a damn near perfect hit to the boiler. Neither deer went more than 20 yards, running dead. However, heavy cover, I'd go with a smaller, shorter gun. No need for the magnum. I have always wanted a 30-30 lever action. I have the info to a guy actually selling one on here now if you are interested. |
Short range defeat lay under 300 yards at extreme situation...
Ok I'm not going to do 260 I thought about the others I already shoot .243 at deer I just wanted something else
Yea i dont know if the 30/30 is much good past 150, it has the trajectory of a rainbow once you get past 100. The 257 roberts is a sweet shooting caliber and the 25 caliber rounds shooting 117 gr bullets is the perfect combo for deer sized game imo. I shot a 25/06 for about 5 years and regret selling it every day. Ammo is easier to find for the 25/06 than the 257 roberts and the 25/06 has more power and range.

the 260, 7mm/08, 257 roberts, 308 all darn fine deer cartridges. all are capable way beyond 300 yards just practice and work up to them.RR I can't get more than 150 yards in my BAR. |
"Yea i dont know if the 30/30 is much good past 150, it has the trajectory of a rainbow once you get past 100"
That statement is incorrect in that with the 160 grain Leverevolution ammo now available for the 30-30 it is easily a 200 yard caliber for deer with no rainbow trajectory like the other post stated as with a sightin of + 2 3/4" high at 100 yards it is dead on at 200! After that distance it will drop about 12" at 300 and that's why I said it's good out to 200. |
I looked at 25-06 to and 6.5 creed more but you can't really get rounds for it easily
45 70 will do all you ask.
Yep and it is a great long range out to 500 yards the cowboys used to do it alot wit ladder sights and peep sights
IMO - .270 Win is the best one gun whitetail hunting rifle caliber.
The saying is; "the 7mm RM shoots as flat as a .270 and hits as hard as a .30-06". Ole' Man |

It really depends on maximum range potential.
Shorter range shots don't need the flat shooting rounds such as the 7MM Mag. Longer range shots do. Larger calibers do better creating larger wound channels. Smaller, faster, lighter rounds are better for longer ranges accuracy wise. There have been issues with small wound channels and lack of ability to track & retrieve a kill at shorter shooting distances. You can compensate a smaller, faster round with a lighter skinned or lighter weighted round to 'open up' sooner at shorter range on thin skinned animals such as Whitetails. Consult a guide in your area for their advisement. They'll give you accurate info. |
Ive never killed anything "to dead" & either of my 7mags are great. (As is my 7-08 & 280) the 7mag is THE most popular mag on the market & there are ALOT of them in TN! Honestly most 7mag ammo is not loaded very hot. The cartridge has alot more to offer when handloaded.
I have no drug/drinkn issues & I'm faithful to my wife of 19.5yrs, so one of my "allowed bad habits" is collecting big game rifles! ;) My calibers are 22/250, 243s, 270, 7-08, 280, 7mags, 30/06s, 300 Wby Mag, 308 Lazzeroni Warbird, 35 Rem, 45/70s & 50cal MLs. If I HAD to liquidate all but 1 rifle I suppose I'd keep one of my 7mags, because they are just so versatile! Now having said all that, for your asking about another TN deer cartridge... you would REALLY like a nice, sweet 7-08!!! :party0005: HL |
No it's not 300 win mag is
