EHD in IOWA zone 4

sorry to be a deliverer of bad news but anyone coming to zone 4 Iowa can expect an 80% death loss. I own a gun and bow shop and guide a few hunters so this will cost me money to be honest. i just dont think the DNR wants this to get out but if you have this tag its only fair you should know!!!

I agree Im in zone 4 and its horrible. Already found 4 over 150 inches dead. I cant believe the toll its taken on the deer herd

This seems an extraordinarily high death rate ... epidemic sort of numbers. 8 out of 10 seems very high to me. Has DNR come up with any clues as to why?

It was because the drought. These little midge flies that carrry the disease moved in and stayed in what little water we had. They bite the deer when they are coming to drink and infect them with ehd. Its a pretty wicked disease. Kills them within 72 hours. They would die in or right near water because the ehd gave them a horrible fever and there body would excessively overheat.
