Ok, I am posting this cause basically I suck at it. This is the best buck I have on cam this year. He is a 5x3 with mabey not a trophy rack compared to some. Me I am shooting this deer all day long lol. But here is my question, how old do you guys think he is? I am putting him at 4.5 yo but then again like I said before I suck at this. To me he has all the signs as a mature deer. What do you guys think, plus I think it is a great pic of him.

3.5 yr old... not filled out enough to be 4.5
|
yup, snapper is correct. He is a solid 3.5yr old buck. Nice deer.. Hard to let that one walk... Good luck, I hope to see a pic of him in your hands.. Shoot straight..

I'm more interested in the Tasco trail cam
What kind of Tasco is that?
Remember if the rack looks good, it looks real good to the 16 year old hunter on the next property. |
A strong 2.5 or a weak 3.5 year old....what state are you in?

I am in western new york. here is a 1.5 yo in the same spot just facing you. Looking at the other one, the way his belly saggs, dip in the backbone and his chest looks deep and we arent really in the rut at this point. Thats kinda why I was putting him at 4.5.
Valentine, cant remeber what kind it was but it was $50 at walmart. great pics and it even takes a pretty good video that I dont know how to post. |

When they look mature i ,m lousy at it too. I,d go 4.5 cause of fold at rear of belly sag and folds at neck /shoulder. Were antlers one more click towards ears i,d bet a nickel on it! Let us know after you do the deed on em.

i would say 3.5 and as a fellow new york hunter i know what you mean. by me that buck would be the talk of the town for our hunting season. good luck, hope you get him
|
Probably 3.5, he has just a bit of belly and back swag. His rack, although he looks to have potential, is barely at his ears, kind of thin. He does have fair tine length though. Next yr he may have all his tines and more mass and spread. For your area though, he may be as big as he will ever get. The main thing, is if you are happy with him, then hang him on the wall!
|
oh yea I would be happy with him. I put this deer at above average in our area and hold out till the last week of archery trying to get an above average deer.
I know his antlers dont really support a 4.5 yo I was just thinking on body size alone. |
You need to hold out for him until gun season, need the points for our team! Seriously though if you see him take him down anytime, nice looking deer.

Yes the spike is a 1.5 year old but that doesnt mean all your deer start out as spikes their first year and by "4.5"" they are 5x3s. All deer are different. If that deer is 4.5 post up some pics of what you think are 2.5 and 3.5 years....... Check out Charles alsheimer's Book Quality deer management the Basics and Beyond it completely changed my view on hunting, judging, and growing deer and i know he did this in NY. I did his program and now Me or one of my buddies shoots a 130s or better inch deer every year. The before and after pics are pretty awesome.

chrisvie13 yea I know all deer are different. I have 4,6 and 8pts pics of 1.5 yo. I know all 4.5 yo dont turn out to be 5x3's. This just happened to be the best comparison pics of 2 bucks in the same spot.I have another decent 8pt but it was during the velvet season and tough to judge that one. I would put him at 2.5.
