Finally got one.

Only took me 2 weeks but finally got one. I hadnt even been seeing any deer which didnt make sense. Just had all my corn cut so figured they would be scavenging the fields for leftovers the combine didnt get. Also they were killing my corn piles and my cams were getting a ton of pics but I just wasnt seeing anything. Didnt matter if I hunted morning, middle of the day, or evenings I saw nothing.

Last Saturday I got in a stand over looking my biggest corn field at around 5:45am and about 10 till 7 one walked out of the woods about 125 yards out. Now my scope is dead on but its magnification sucks so I have a horrible time trying to size deer up with my scope. I was trying to figure out if I wanted to shoot him or let him walk. I saw he had horns but I couldnt tell how big the rack was, how many points he had, or even how big his body was. Well lets say Im glad I pulled the trigger. Also I dont understand why all my friends shoot with .270s or even 7 mags I put all my deer down with my .243 and the most I have ever had to track a deer was 15 feet.

I like the rack on that buck! I always like those big 6 and 7s.

.243 hollow points. Deer wont be getting up.

MD DEERHUNTER 10-02-2012 08:55 AM

Bs alert! Where they in a cage when you shot them?!!

thomasmgp 10-02-2012 09:07 AM

Some people need to take a lesson in what a bullet does, especially a smaller caliber like a .243, when it enters a living thing.

dEsireTohUnt 10-02-2012 09:36 AM

I agree with thomas, I have shot all of my deer with a .243 and none of them have ran any farther that 10 yards.

takedownfreak123 10-02-2012 10:14 AM

I also would have been very happy with that buck Congrats. Bunch of haters a .243 is moving therefore it does a decent amount of damage. I believe you

Nice buck - congrats!

I think I'll stay with the 7mm mag. When it can kill a moose,...I know it'll kill a deer.

DocD 10-02-2012 06:49 PM

Congrats, very nice deer, 243 is a great round, I believe what you say, is that your stand in the background?

elmoughler 10-03-2012 03:17 AM

not so fast..my 14 y/o daughter has only ever had 1 deer run on her, she shoots a 223....usually they drop where they are standing. I on the other hand have had em run plenty of times.

:mad:Why slam the guy on his claim? Who cares, he got the deer, didn't he?

Nice Buck and congrats!

A .243 will kill just as dead as a cannon and you will have more meat to eat!:s4::s4:

Pity the fool !

Mr. T.

Ain't used one in a while I bet.

Anyway T-Bone...nice poach !

NorthJeff 10-03-2012 10:47 AM

Real nice...congrats!

fastetti 10-03-2012 03:57 PM

Congrats on the buck, I think this story is losing its point, it's a successful hunting story.

a .243 can drop a deer in its tracks. I won't use one but put it through the heart or bot shoulders and it can drops in its tracks. Not saying it always will.

People need to remember, Midwest deer and SE USA deer are A LOT different in size so it's going to have a different effect on different deer in different areas.

Also, I'm not sure about all states, but most states do have leg tags and I don't see any legs so how do we know it isn't tagged on the leg?

The only thing that I can see being illegal is that chain! LOL

Congrats again!

I'm selling my 30-06 & 7mm-08, and downsizing to a .243

I heard more stories about boom-flop from a .243 than any other round.

HAHAHAHAHAH

Nice deer. I have killed them with the 243. Not my favorite choice, but if you do your job, it will do its job. I run a little heavier firepower here, mainly because you never know what you are going to run across in this country.

AquamanPSD 10-23-2012 11:35 AM

I have seen a guy kill a doe with a .17.... illeagal as it is he hit her directly in the nose and she didn't flinch.... the caliber of the gun means little if you know how to use it. However move farther north where the fawns are the same size as the bucks down south in the body and theres a little more room to argue. I can't imagine shooting one of those Canada bruisers with a .243 at 150 yards but I'm sure it can be done.

YotaMan88 05-22-2013 10:59 AM

I have only shot a .243 for deer and it is just fine for me as well. I live in Nebraska and they deer are not small bodies like some may think a .243 is only good for. Even dropped a doe at 250 yards with the sucker. Nice deer and congrats

If you're thinking about possibly going on the road with a comedy act, you fail big time! By the way, SC doesn't require bucks to be tagged and most areas of the state don't have any bag limits either, oh wise one!!!
