How wide should I make my shooting lanes?

My dad thinks that cutting shooting lanes that are like 5-10 yards WIDE are the best way to do it. He says, "I want to be able to get a good shot off when I hunt." I personally think this is crazy! I think that they should be as conceiled as possible. What is your opinion on this matter? How would you go about cutting your own shooting lanes? And we only hunt on 150 acres. Also, he uses a chainsaw to cut his.

Cover matters a lot to deer. And they do notice big sudden openings. I would vote with your take on this. Smaller the better. Maybe make a few small openings - small ones to see them coming and another for shooting.

i'd go about 20 feet wide, at a lil over 300 yards long, as long and straight as possible. i used a dozer, cut right through the middle of our 40 acres at lake o' the pines, that same day, all the deer in the forest came to see the new "court". had way better success rate than b4. after awhile, the edges of yer lane will grow in, so be ready for that. gl

I gotta agree with your dad. You want enough space to be ready, and enough of a window to be able to get a shot off. You don't want that buck in open for a few seconds. You wanna give him some time out there.
