Help me estimate deer score
Here is a couple pictures I pulled off one of my cameras the other day, I know they're not the best pictures for size estimation and I'm horrible at guessing this stuff. For eastern Oklahoma he qualifies as a good deer. I can't wait for October 1st to get here. I hunted him hard last year but he stayed almost completely nocturnal. Last year I thought he was dead after he disappeared from my camera for about 2 weeks last fall so I tagged out with an average 8 & 7 point, only for him to reappear a few days later. I have pictures of him within days of loosing his rack this last winter. He was a nice 12 last year and is bigger bodied and has a little more mass and height to his rack this year. If any of you are any good at estimating what a deer will score I'd love your input!

 it doesn't matter WHAT that "toadious maximous" scores, a deer like that get's NAILED ON SIGHT unless you are in very very few, extremely rare locations & purposefully awaiting something 180+.
I've gotta 154", 13.5" wide 14pt (mainframe 6x6 + matching kickers on each G-2) and that buck in your pic will DWARF my 14ptr. I'm usually conservative & I typically ONLY guestimate gross, especially on 150+s. I would guess that buck around 165-170? Congrats, hope you get him! :party0005: HL |
I would say upwards of 170..great buck with a wall of tines!
|
Wow, now THAT is a dandy! He is for sure 170 no doubt. I would guess closer to 175-180. Man, what a toad! Good luck. Pretty sure I would miss like Elmer Fudd if I seen that thing.
|
I would say upper 170s
|
OMG. You so need night vision on your bow.
|
We have a few 170's hanging on the wall but heavier. Yours should be around low 180's!!
That's an amazing looking buck! May the rut be with you. |
That think it a freak! and he looks almost perfectly typical. I would say he would be close to 180 as well depending on the mass. Good luck!

even if ya are waitin on a 180+, yer deer has arrived!!!!!!!!
|
I've gotta 154", 13.5" wide |

lol BX, I was telling him he's considerably bigger than MY 154" er that's only 13.5". In NO way was I saying this toad is 13.5"! |
I'm jealous! Easy 175, but could probably push into the 180s. I'd go broke taking days off to try and get that stud.

Well, I am not a self proclaimed expert; however, I do have a considerable amount of experience. At best it is very difficult to determine what he would score by just looking at the photo. Typically the width from tip of the ears would be about 14 inches. So guesstimating based on that he would appear to have a 17-18 inch outside spread. Roughly doing the math he would fall between 140 to 150 at best. Don't get me wrong he is a great buck and I wouldn't hesisitate in shooting him, but people have an ability to mis-judge deer and I have yet to see anyone be proficient at field judging deer. If you notice in both pictures there is nothing to allow you to compare size to except to a juvenile buck. In both picture look at the deers position. Picture #2 his ears are pinned back and this exaggerates the size of the horns. In picture #1 he is quartering towards the camera so again you don't clearly determine his width. Therefore is is impossible to accurately estimate his size. I happen to be a game biologist from an educational standpoint and professionally I hunt for a living. I am not trying to offend anyone or down play the deer, just an opinion like everyone else.

That buck is pushing low 50" beam length alone! He's all of 160 +
|
we are talkin the top pic, left deer...i dont think the bottom pic and top pic are of the same deer...look at the brow tines, curved on one, but not the other.
|
Nope, it appears to be the same deer from different angles. Front vs back view. I am not try'n to take anything away from anyone or the animal, but I bet when he's on the ground he will have a lot of ground shrinkage. Remember an opinion was asked for and I gave mine right or wrong. It's a good buck but most people see and kill 150's all the time but when you look look in the book their names are not in the book with the score. People over estimate the size of deer. I am guilty of the same thing. Me and my son were hunting in Texas and I saw what I thought was a monster buck. It was footy and the buck was chasing a doe. The buck mysteriously appeared and I had a split second to decide to shoot. Of course I pulled the trigger and dropped him in his tracks. I told my son that I had just killed the biggest deer I had ever seen in the wild. I discovered when I walked upon the deer he was not the giant I had shot at all. He was a 17 1/2 inch 9 pt rack on a 103 pound deer that was chasing a doe in the fog. I have seen several instances where the hunters eyes plays tricks on him. The average hunter has never seen a 150 class buck in real life and cannot judge a deer effectively based on the lack of experience. Just my opinion...

I say 150-160
|
Awesome Buck!
|
140-150 is no way. Look at the tines. Those measurements add up. And he looks like he's got good mass, too. I say he goes 168-172 and that's conservative.
