You can add. Then a 5x5=25 and a 5+5=10.
Back to remedial abreviations:

In this context " X" means " by" , not " times" (i.e. 5 " by" 5). Hint: a 6X6 elk doesn' t really have 36 points. ;)

RE: 4x4 or 8 point?

In Idaho we use total points on whitetails (10 total points is a 10 pointer) and count by the side for mule deer (4 points on a side is a 4 point).

Usually on the mulies if they are nontypical with more than 4 points to a side then we add in the brow tines.
Like if you had a nontypical with 7 points on a side you would also count the eye guards and call it an 8 x 8.

On a straight typical 4 pointer we do not add in the eye guards, normally.

Good Lord! I may have started another civil war[:o]
I guess it' s more an east/west thing by the sounds of it. Or could it be the way we were brought up. I was told to call a 4X4 a 4 point. It always sounded small compared to the 8 point (I watched a lot of hunting on tv) the professional hunters shot. So I started calling them by both sides (sounds WAY bigger now):D
As for muleys, I was told not to count brow tines in my description...talk about sounding really small! So now I call em' by sides (including brow tines) just cus I like it that way. Any way you look at it, we' re pretty lucky we can do this hunting thing anyway! God bless us all on this anniversary...here' s to good hunting in both our FREE COUNTRIES:) JDinAB

JRW' s post had me laughing out loud.

" Hey Joe-Bob, did you see that 36 pointer runnin' up the hill over there...."

:D

Come on now IBM. That is not my bow making that popping sound. It is the sound of those limbs on your bow delaminating......;)

Here in PA we call it soda
There you go stereotyping.....

You mean " Here in SE PA we call it soda"

Because here in NW, NC, & SW PA we call it POP:D;)[:o]
Heck, if you' re close enough to the NY line it even becomes.....PAAAP!:D

BTW, it' s still and 8 point up here![:-]

RE: 4x4 or 8 point?

We use the rough score and 4 point or 4x5(if unmatched) to describe a deer we saw or took. As to mulies it is a 4 and if he has brows with eye guards (again using the rough score to better describe the deer).

Tit for tat, really don' t matter much I think we all know what we are talking about. I will admit an 8 sounds better that 4 but it all equals the same. I agree with SJ adding the score more accurately describes the deer. For small ones we use terms like dink, handle bars, basket, etc, again a vivid picture of what has been seen.

In Oklahoma its called pop. We count total points, if it has 8 points its an 8 pointer etc. My dad lives in Oregon and they do the 4x4 or 4 pointer = 8 pointer etc crap.

Skeeter-If everyone had access to the caliber of deer we are fortunate to hunt in alberta and saskatchewan I don' t think they would feel the need to call a 4x4 an 8 point to make it sound bigger.
