Tracking in the Rain...
So bow season opens this weekend here in Kentucky. There is about 105123456% chance its going to rain at some point during the weekend hunt. My question, although it may be a dumb one, What the heck should I do if I hit a big one while its raining? I hunt in heavy forest on a hillside that would make a billy goat cry. Is there anything I can do before, after, or during a track? what about dogs? can they track in the rain? Does anyone know of any dog teams in the north eastern part of KY? any help would be appriciated because this is a major fear of mine!

I usually won't bowhunt if it's going to rain. The last doe I got was hit a little far back so I let her lay overnight. It rained all night and was still raining the next day. I took my golden\collie mix along to help. It took us a couple of hours, but the dog found her eventually. She died only about 100 yd from where I saw her last, but was buried in some tall canary grass. I doubt I would have found her without the help.

My favorite time to deer hunt is during a light rain, that's when I do alot of stalking! I wouldn't miss the opener due to rain. Like others said, make a good shot and you should be fine. Good luck!

Make a good, solid shot. When I track in the rain I try to get on the trail right away. Waiting is always a good idea, but when the trail vanishes, waiting won't help. The benefit of rain is that it makes movement quiet. I was helping a buddy track a big nine point in the rain that he had gut shot. We were able to walk within fifteen yards of the bedded buck so he could put another arrow into it. So, if it is raining, use the quiet conditions, and get on the trail right away.
