Mossberg 835 Slugster accuracy

cheap federal sabots shoot all over the place at 50 yards no consistent grouping.6" high and 3" right at 50 yards. new to slug guns . any suggestions? barrel isnt bent bore site and iron sights line up

Yep, they are just like anything else you do concerning accuracy in a firearm and that's the fact that you need to keep feeding it different brands until you find the one it likes. That's as long as you know that you and the sights and/or scope are not the culprits to begin with!

I've tried several diff rounds in my Rem 870 and have found that the best accuracy is Hornady SST sabots. Give them a try.

Lightfield EXP Hybred is a load you may want to try. It is made to shoot in rifled or smoothbore barrels. It is a 1.25 oz slug, and it hits the target really hard.

I agree Lightfield EXPs

I agree with trying as many different types as you reasonably can. Also, if possible, get a lead sled type rest or something that will help you with the recoil of slugs. Shooting Slugs in a benchrest situation is no fun at all, but it is the only way to truly find out what load your gun likes best.

lesson learned

i realized this afternoon that I (me) dont like 3 1/2" slug shells owwwww lol

Topgun 3006 08-18-2012 06:43 PM

That's for sure on the ouch, LOL! You may also want to tinker and see if it will shoot better with 3" than 3 1/2" ones. My buddy has a Benelli turkey gun and it shoots 3" turkey loads much tighter than the same 3 1/2" shells. You just never know what a gun will like best, but get a good bench setup like was mentioned or you will be the cause of not shooting well because you'll be flinching due to the recoil.

I would be careful using a lead sled or any device that is solid against the butt of the long gun with little to no give. People have cracked their stocks using these types of rests.

I have stuck with the 2.75" shells in my 3" chamber for slugs. I do not see the need for the extra recoil and muzzle blast of the longer slug offerings.

Which choke are you useing?
It may be that the choke you are useing is to tight.
Try a more open choke, and see.
The tighter choke could deform the slug, and make it fly wild.
Good Luck
