Deer Hunting with the .454 Casull

Does anyone have a first hand account of ammunition for deer sized game. When I bought my Ruger I bought 260 gr JHP because that was all the guy had at the time. I know all the major ammo co. make something for the 454 casull. What would be the most practical for deer out to 125 yds? I was leaning towards the 300 grain from either Winchester or Federal. Any help would be appreicated.

You didn' t say anything wrong Smokem , some folks may not know much about the round your question deals with . I' ve seen the .454 Casull demonstrated , and I have no doubt that it could take out a grizzly . If the cartridge is legal where you live then try it out . Get lots of practice with it first .

I' ve noticed that some folks on here don' t seem to care for pistol hunting , I don' t happen to be one of them although I don' t pistol hunt .

If you can' t get an answer on this forum, then check out Graybeard outdoors

There are several handgun hunters there that use the .454 casull.

I would recomend using the round you can control the best. The diameter coming out of the pipe is enough to take the deer. The impact energy is tremendous. I' d find a good hollowpoint that shot well and use it. I hunted with a 5 inch barrel Dan Wesson .357 but didn' t get a chance to shoot. That was more than enough and the Casull is far more gun.

Good luck.

Thanks for the link Warren. I am going with the Federal 300 grain bear claw.

Hey Fellow Hand Gun Hunter! I too handgun hunt and own a .454 Casull. Here are some stats for the 300.0 grain bullet weight.

0 Yards: 1802 Velocity 2164 Energy ft-lbs Path (inches) -1.50 Drop Inches 0.00

50 Yards: 1625 Velocity, 1759 Engery Foot Lbs. , Path: 0.90, Drop Inches: 1.43

100 Yards: 1463 V, 1425 EFL, P 0.00, DI 6.17

150 Yards: 1318 V, 1157 EFL, P -4.98, DP 14.98

200 Yards: 1194 V, 951 EFL, P -14.98, DP 28.82

Of course this is for my own set up (handloads) and you will have you own stats but this will be fairly close to factory loads since that is the route your going. If you are looking for a little more distance and you are shooting a Contender etc... you might want to check out some other barrels such as the .308 etc... Have fun and good luck!! Oh yeah, you might want to pick up a book called " Ron Sabo' s Long Range Pistol Handbook - A Practical Guide For lang-Range Pistol Enthusuast" It is full of great info that you will certainly need and use. CDH :)

Thanks CDH. I will be going the handloading route. It is just a matter of components.
