buck still has head gear

Not at all uncommon. I have seen bucks several times during turkey season actively pursuing does.

Yeah, i'm from wisconsin here, i've heard many guys this year say they're still seeing them with horns yet. Different weather pattern possibly is making them hold longer?

Heading to our farm in Illinois wednesday for three days of shed hunting. Hope they have all dropped before I get there!

Just saw a small racked 8pt today on way to work hit and on side of road not too far from my job. Wasn't there yesterday. Coyotes hadn't got to it yet. First racked buck I have seen around here this late in some time.

I have heard that the hold their antlers longer when they are pumping the testosterone from the rut and "2nd" rut later into the winter. Maybe there was a late breading season or second go around in your area causing them to stay pumped up longer?

Dang nice buck! I seem um once or twice carry into march.

fastetti 02-29-2012 03:39 PM

I think the late second rut where I hunt really has them holding on longer. I don't mind since it will be another week before I can get out and do some shed hunting. I've heard of some guys having some good luck in Southern Illinois right now but personally I think there are still a really good amount holding.

Nice buck. A few years ago i saw a buck with his rack the 2nd week of April here in Michigan.

HDMontana 03-01-2012 08:37 AM

Really nice buck. Jealous of you if that is property you will be hunting next year. He should be bigger.

MUZZY 100 03-01-2012 10:11 AM

Im still seing bucks with full racks as of 2/29 here in Illinois.

Buckkiller7 03-05-2012 09:11 AM

Left Vermont Wed afternoon and headed to our Illinois farm for some shed hunting. Picked up a bunch, but also saw 5 bucks with both sides and two with singles. Two of the bucks were big, one easily in the 150's.

snapper1982 03-05-2012 02:48 PM

it isnt because of the rut it is because of the weather.
when deer have a hard time getting food they will lose their antlers earlier. we have had an exteremly mild winter. so they are holding longer..

it is not just a midwest thing. i have friends in canada and they are still holding there as well as out west. it is happening all over
