I dont like heights, so all of my ladder stands are about 13' high. Granted I do get picked off now and then, but I have also taken many deer at this height and even lower. When I first started hunting, 9' was my max, and I still was able to harvest deer.

I find 20-25 works best for me . High enough to not get spotted but not so high that it is a hard downward shot

From 13 -18 feet varies

I like 18 to 20 it seems like you can get away with a little more.

Someday, when things are slow, take a couple puff balls or better yet, a smoke bomb and climb into a 10-ft stand and 30-foot stand. See where the smoke reaches deer nose height. When we did it 25-years ago for a piece in Bow and Arrow Hunting Magazine, we were surprised. You might be as well. If you want to be even more surprised, see where the smoke goes if you are sitting on the ground. |
I use a climber and my haul line lets me get up to 18' to my seat. Sometimes I go 2-3 " higher if need be. I have 2 trees where I only go up 12-14 '. Shot deer from all of them, all depends upon the terrain and cover.
