Sad
2 Attachment(s)
Had the motorcycle out for a 200 mile loop today. Crossed a lake and saw an interesting and sad sight. The pics are hard to see, they are from my cell phone. But the buck was in the middle of the lake bobbing up and down. Some said he'd been out there for several hours. Local FD said they couldn't help and the game warden was watching from the shore.
The lake it was in is a resevoir for Akron Ohio I guess which is the reason they couldn't take a boat out. Sounds like a lame excuse to me. Hate to see an animal suffer like this. -Jake |
The deer is the black spot in the ice right in the center of the picture. Follow thr broken ice trail and you'll see it. It looked like a decent 8 pointer. Like I said, cell phone picture, not the best.

that is sad was it still alive
|
Ya. It was treading water trying to get up onto the ice. You'd see it crawl up on, and then the ice would break and it'd be in the water again.

What a shame...seems like they could take a Boat out, rope the Deers Head/Antlers and pull it to safety?I like to Fair Chase/Deer Hunt but hate to see an Animal suffer and die needlessly like that! :(

Had this been in my town, I woulda had the boat out and roped it to drag to shore just like you said. The locals said it was Akron's water supply though and that's why no one could help. I woulda just dropped a boat in and done it.

Yep, sad indeed.

So if it was a human they still couldn't rescue it also because it a reservoir ? Is that the line of reasoning...?

Circle of life....sad but ya can't save em all. Besides fish have to eat too.
|
yes mother nature can be a bitch.....
|
natural selection

The "reservoir" deal makes no sense because all water has to be treated before use, so either somebody doesn't give a rip or thought it was too risky to go out there for an animal.
|
yeah reservoir is just a lame excuse.... I agree. I mean what's worse someone slipping a flat bottom in there and pulling the deer out. Or having a rotting carcass in the drinking supply?
|
costly and dangerious!!! theres your reason
|
Yep, I agree with that last post. It just wasn't in that buck's future to breed any more does! Too bad, as I'd much rather see ANYanimal go quickly, no matter what it is!!!!!!
|
Was this Meander Reservoir? Its the only one I know of in the area that doesn't allow anyone to fish, boat, or even step on the property.

They should have just shot it. No need to waste a lot of resources on rescuing an animal. It would have done two things by shooting it. Added nutrients to the lake, and more importantly, ended the bucks suffering. I think the same thing about dogs that need rescuing. This is coming from someone who owns, and loves his, dogs too. Life is harsh at times. We have to make choices based upon the resources available. Rescuing animals has the same cost as people, and it's not cheap in most cases. I've seen where my local FD and PD have rescued animals at a large cost in times while the budget is tight they are laying people off. How stupid. If the owners were more responsible, the animals would not be in need of rescue. Losing them would be a tough lesson learned. |
A weird post from a Pa guy. In Pa you see on the news and in the paper deer being rescued from all kinds of strange predicaments, not just ice.

On google Earth it's called La Due Reservoir or Akron City Reservoir. -Jake |
