Absolutely correct.
They should have just shot it. No need to waste a lot of resources on rescuing an animal. It would have done two things by shooting it. Added nutrients to the lake, and more importantly, ended the bucks suffering.
I think the same thing about dogs that need rescuing. This is coming from someone who owns, and loves his, dogs too.
Life is harsh at times. We have to make choices based upon the resources available. Rescuing animals has the same cost as people, and it's not cheap in most cases. I've seen where my local FD and PD have rescued animals at a large cost in times while the budget is tight they are laying people off. How stupid.
If the owners were more responsible, the animals would not be in need of rescue. Losing them would be a tough lesson learned.

A weird post from a Pa guy. In Pa you see on the news and in the paper deer being rescued from all kinds of strange predicaments, not just ice.
