Scope for Savage 220?
 

I just ordered a savage 220 slug gun yesterday at Dick's. The gun will be in next week so im looking for a scope to match with it. Does anyone have any suggestions or person experience with this gun would be greatly appreciated

I'd pick whatever rifle scope you like. I would not get a "shotgun" scope, as the 220 will shoot out to "rifle" ranges.

My Savage 220f wears a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40, they maybe still on sale on-line at Cabeals

Suggest any quality variable scope suitable for use on a center fire rifle. Something like a 1.5-6x 32 or 40 mm should be ideal. You should expect the Savage 220 to shot very good groups and be very effective out 150 yards +/-. A scope in the class of a Leupold Vari-X III, Bushnell Elite 4200 or Ziess Conquest should perform very well and give you many years of great service. I suggest that you do a good deal of range testing because the "slug loads" have a relatively slow muzzle velocity and poor ballistic coefficients. The arc is rather dramatic, especially past 100-125 yards.

I would get a "shotgun" scope, you purchased a great slug gun, don't go short on a scope. There are a lot of good shotgun scopes on the market. there is a difference between shotgun & rifle scopes. jmop Doc

I plan on buying the savage 220 myself and I was am planning on putting a Nikon BDC on it. I'm not sure which one yet. I have the Pro Staff on my 30.06 and my inline and love it. As Mojotex said, with the drastic arc out to 200 yards, I am hoping the multiple crosshairs will make it easier in the field. Let me know how you like the gun after you get home from the range. I have a little trouble understanding why you would need a variable scope on a gun that is going to max at 150 yards. I would look for a quality 4X with good light gathering ability and wide field of vision. It may be that you would have to go to a variable to find that but I certanly would not worry about going over 6X. You are going to need field of vision far more than magnification. I can't remember the last time I went past 6X on my rifles even elk hunting.

I have the Nikon slug hunter BDC, I find that the BDC crosshairs are a nice option to have shooting at long distances.

From what I have read (and that isn't a whole lot) the difference you get with a shotgun scope is that they are paralax adjusted to 50 or 75 yds, as opposed to a rifle scope which are 100 yds (or more?). I hear from some guys that they think a shotgun scope is built to withstand greater recoil, but I believe that is BS.

Paralax is complicated and I don't understand it that well. But the longer the paralax free distance is, the better. The way shotguns shoot sabots these days, it makes no sense to go with a shotgun scope.
