IMO, it depends on where you are hunting. If you are in deep woods were shots will only get to around 100 yards, I would go with a 30-30 or other brush caliber. If you expect farther shots I like a 270.

Its not that easy to say one caliber is the best in all situations because it wouldn' t be true . Where one caliber might work fine in one situation it might not be to much gun or not enough in another situation . I believe you should consider all the different aspects as to where you will be hunting and then try to make a informed decision . What I consider the best gun might be sadly lacking in your case .

I still-hunt whitetails in the thick stuff in Ontario.

My choice of rifles is one of the quick shooters (levers, pumps and autos) - a slow action doesn' t cut it under these conditions. Right now my primary deer gun is a BLR in .358 Winchester. I shoot 220 grain bullets I swage myself at about 2350 fps. There' s nothing comparable on the market.

Occasionally, I carry a Remington 760 pump in 30-06 that I load with 180 grain ballistic tips to a velocity of 2470 fps. This year I may also carry a Globco 555 in .303 British. Since I haven' t (yet) begun swaging bullets in this calibre, I may just use 180 grain factory ammo.

I like my Rem 700 VLS in .308 Win. Ov course it gets a little heavy to carry in the mountians of northern PA. The weight is worth it though I can place my shots consistantly out to about 450 yards using 165 grn BTHP

If I' m hunting a spot that has the potential of a longer shot (100-400 yards), ny Ruger M77 .270 is the ticket.

For the short heavy cover hunting, I' ll take my Marlin .450.

When I do use a rifle I use a 30:06. But since I hunt in thick areas I have gone to a good rifles slug gun.

Like everyone keeps saying, shoot what you like, anything 243 or larger. A 270 is a great caliber and I love mine, but a few years ago I got a 300 Win Mag and loaded 165 gr ballistic tips for an out of state hunt, it happens to be the most accurate gun I own and I dont mind recoil. I know its a little much for whitetails but it works for me and like kimndavid said dead is dead and I NEVER have to track one after the shot

I like my Marlin outfitter .444 for woods hunting. Load 240 grain Nosler JHP. For mixed terrain I like my Winchester M70 featherweight in .308 165 grain Sierra Game King.
