Yes or No?

Would you let him Grow one more year? My partner and I have decided to let him pass. What do you think he scores roughly?

Yes if I knew no one else can hunt him and you have enough land to support that. Other wise no.......

Might score a 100, and yes I would let him walk. That's a decision you need to make because everyone's mantality and expectation is different from one another.

Genetics doesn't appear to be on his side IMO. He looks as if he could gain some mass, but probably never get any wider or longer tines. How old do y'all think he is?
|
It's not a good shot to judge age by.
That looks to be a fairly large bodied buck with not much of a rack. It reminds me of the 6 pt I shot this year. He was an older buck past his prime. It's quite possible the buck pictured is an older one. |
Where I hunt, He'd be gettin' a dirt nap.
|
I have better images of him, we are thinking 3.5 we pulled a freak nasty off this land last year hoping he's bigger next year

The only way he is going to get any bigger, is if he can grow while hanging on my wall.
|
looks like he might be on his way down? were these takin during the rut?
|
These all have been taken in the last wee or so our rut started later then most areas up here. He doesn't look like that old of deer to me. I could be wrong. We have 2 smaller younger 8's that looks to have the same genetics as him. Our plan was to keep the cams up all winter into next year and see if he goes down hill or not. Idk, I hope we are making the right choice..

He's definately an adult deer. 3.5 being the youngest he would be, but I think he's at least 4.5 so you should take the buck next year.
If he is like many bucks where I hunt in Douglas County (near Superior/Duluth) area I'm guessing he's in his two prime years. He may have another year of good growth, but he could start declining next year as well. The winters are just hard in a lot of Wisconsin and Minnesota so its hard to say if a buck will max out at 4.5 or 5.5 years. Some bucks in areas with good feed can be at their best at 6.5 like they are around Eau Claire, WI where my parents live. That is not the case where we go gun hunting though. I would not wait too long to take him. He's definately a nice buck. |
shooter in my neck of the woods
|
Maybe you should leave him till next year. If there is chance that someone else might get him before next year , put him down. That is unless there are bigger deer in the area to shoot of course.
|
He looks like a 3.5 to 4.5YO in this pic. That last pic does not look like the same buck.
110-115 green max, tough to judge. Short times, thin mass, big body and apparent grey around the muzzle is why i think he's older. I wouldn't have passed on him. Doubtful he'll get bigger on top. |

In Virginia he would be hanging in the meat locker. Man we don't get many big bodies like that around here!
|
Yes, at least 1 more year, if not 2. I would say he scores around 100.
|
The real question is, "What are your standards?" If you are a trophy hunter looking for 140 class deer then you let him pass. If you control your own property and are participating in Whitetail deer management you would also let him pass. However, if you are happy to take a buck per year then go ahead and take him now or in late muzzleloader. Where I'm from in Virginia, he would be quite the prize and I don't know of anyone that would let him pass.
