RE: scalp/antler mounting

Been doin taxidermy for years & have done a lot of horn~mounts for folks..A lot of em with the skin & what meat was left slam dry..Put em in a pot of water with no more antler bur than you can help under the water & boil the heck out of em..I usually have to prop a piece of wood under the main beams so they' ll set just right..I use dry preservative in the water with em but as some of the other fellas said,,borax will do just fine..After they boil awhile take a semi dull knife(pretty stiff blade)& you can scrape the skin & meat that' s left right off..I mount em myself using either felt or camo material..If you need some more info on how I do it(mountin th horns that is:D)just gimme a hollar on email..Cost you about 10 bucks give er take if you cut your own panel..

I mounted my brother inlaw' s 5 point from last year. We soaked it on salt water and then clorox. I bought some fur looking felt and a styrofoam ball. I mounted it to an old wooden toilet seat that I was throwing out. It looks good, (I think).

Unless you plan to keep the antlers outside, you need to get all of the hair and meat off of the skull cap. Raw flesh is a feast for dermestids, which you don' t want in your house, especially if you have any mounts.
