Mr. Whitetail

Ok I just had to say something about larry weishun. Aka mr.Whitetail. I have noticed that this guy for being considered a authority on Whitetails does things that make me go hmmmm? For instance I been watching him all week on the sportsman channel. He never sprays down with scent away. He always uses a blind that is never brushed in like it should be, just a blind like in the middle of a bean field? And I only seen him use a pistol or rifle? It just frustrates me how these guys get to be called gods of the Whitetail world! They wouldn't be able to kill a record buck on my property if their life depended on it! Just because you can shoot big deer cause a real hunter sits you down in a prime spot and tells you when the record Buck is gonna show up, should not give you a prestigious title. I know its the bone business but it just boils my blood! Sorry had vent! Lol

He hunts in prime hunting areas for sure, but maybe he knows that he can be succesful without the sprays. Staying still, hunting the wind is the key.

this always comes up, obviously with different "pro" hunters, but i feel the sameway and thats why i dont watch any of them shows, id rather watch bow hunting videos on youtube lol but if you were able to hunt a high fenced area where deer are watched daily and knew exactly where he will be and when, you could do the same thing, just my opinion..

I'm with you all the way. There is plenty others that could be mentioned as great hunters when in reality all they have are very very deep pockets and time. The one's that I never hear get enough praise is the Benoit Brothers from the New England area. These guys are real Hunters. They track bucks in the big woods. They don't get to the lodge have a cup of coffee and go set a blind that as been saved for them. I would love to see the so called experts hunt the big woods with just a compass. I'll bet they don't stray to far from the road.

I couldn't agree with you more! These guys topple some giants! I watch hunting shows, but I don't view the mainstream T.V. hosts as hunting icons. We all have the passion that is hunting but some of us just have to put a bit more effort forth to make it our very own experience. I wouldn't have it any other way!!! Every bit of time spent in the wild is something I'll treasure all of my life!!!The real icons of this great sport of ours should always include the people who taught us to be respectful of the wildlife that we enjoy and to; at all cost, preserve the resources that we have in the Greatest Nation In The World!!! U.S.A. :patriot: God Bless

Dang, I'm 55 and remember reading about the Beniots in Field & Stream or Outdoor life back in the 70s...I haven't read those mags in over 25 years though simply because it got to where I realized the writers knew less than I did...

I watched Larry W miss 4 times while watching his show one day, that did it for me...I haven't missed 4 deer in the past 10 years, even with my bow or flintlock...If you are that bad you need to put it up...Plus, he isn't using a pistol, he is using a short rifle with a scope...Put a Ruger Blackhawk in .44 mag with no scope in his hands, then go kill deer with it and you have done something...

But you are quite correct, what these guys have is money behind them and that's why most shows are now 30 minute commercials...They are spokesmen for different products...

Ever heard any of these guys say you can kill deer with brogans, blue jeans, a flannel shirt and a beat up 30-30 and CoreLokts while sitting on a 5 gallon can??? Or you can skin it just fine with a 20 year old Old Timer???

Nope, cause they are corporate hoes...

I think we all agree it is hard to watch or read modern day hunting shows and magazines. I first heard of the Benoits on the old "American Sportsman" with Curt Gowdy back in the 70's. But the way everything is staged for sucess for these so called experts I just have to tip my hat more and more when I read or see something about the Benoits. Just tracking a big buck is a merit all in itself. Let alone hunting big big woods like they do. Really a true true form of a "DEER HUNTER" that can and won't be matched by many.

HatchieLuvr 08-13-2011 08:29 AM

As the "sport" is now maturing some of the old timers WERE once true sportsmen but are now they sometimes enjoy the fruits of their hard labors or status. Larry IS a good guy actually and don't let the "staged hunts" fool you, he can hunt with the best of us. But as he's aged he DOES enjoy taking it easy sometimes and hunting some of the easier hunts now. I don't blame him, the older and fatter I get the more I enjoy taking it easy, playing the wind and leaving the gimmicks or even a hard walk to the youngsters.

There are quite a few old timers who did in fact grow up or make their name doing it the hard way. Jim Zumbo, Jim Carmichael, the Wensel brothers, etc... the legends ARE quite capable, don't let their commercialism and enjoying easy hunts fool you. They know their way around the woods.

BUT yes, most of the guys in todays world are just commercial whores and couldn't kill a 2yr old buck on the average lease if their lives depended on it. I laugh and refuse to watch all todays "camo cowboys" running around in their lifted F-250s with girlfriends/wives who are plastic boobed clorox blondes whose first deer with a bow was 160"ers. THOSE guys are the ones doing the sport NOTHING! :s13:

Benoits? Man there's a name I haven't heard in several years. I used to read of them as a teen in the 80s. Is the old man still alive? They hunted the big woods of Maine and killed some HORSES, didn't they do it mostly with Remington 7600s? Always thought it would be fun to load up a backpack, put on some wool, comfortable boots and strike out on a hot track that might last ALL day or even longer!

Fishing is much the same way today, the oldsters like Bill Dance or Roland Martin can STILL catch fish anywhere you can get your feet wet but sure they enjoy their comfort now days. If some of us were in the biz for decades I bet we'd enjoy an easy hunt or two on occasion. :party0005:

Hatch I agree the older you get the more you look for the the easier way no doubt. The Benoits have several books out and at least 2-3 videos. They are very very good. And you are right they all use 30-06 Rem. model 760's. They used to hunt mostly with just peep sights but father time and a tech. have them using Triijicon scopes. Larry the father is in his 80's and the way it sounds doesn't hunt much but still makes homemade knives that are very collectable. I also read were they have a tracking school that you can attend in New Brunswick. I'm sure this stuff can all be found they have a web site if you google their name . Sorry to have hijacked this thread but I too feel that to much credit is givin to those how really don't deserve it. But the Benoits are the real real deal.
