Toss-up between the .25-35 Winchester and the .460 Weatherby Magnum.

greg it depends upon the terrain and distances you will be hunting at. More white tail have been killed with a 30-30 than any other caliber. You can not go wrong with a 30-06, great knock down power and you can shoot them at a distance also.

Here is a suggestion, go down and check out the price of 30-30 & 30-06 ammo and then compare the cost to the other rounds out there. You can not get more bang for your buck than with a 30-30 or 30-06!

Greg, Like Taz said depends on the terrain and distance and type of vegetation you will be hunting in. A 30:06 is a good all around choice. I hunt in a heavy thick area at 75 yards at the max shot. I use a Good 12 guage scoped slug gun. The deer fall like rocks,No suffer no pain

Take your pick. There are so many combinations it will make your head spin.
For whitetails my favorite is the 6.5 X 55, but some are put off by it thinking it is hard to obtain ammo. It' s not that difficult, but it does cost a bit more than 30/06, 30/30 or .308
My second pick would be 7mm/08.
Hard to beat the 30/06 or .308 though b/c of the availability of ammo and different sizes and shapes of rifles chambered for both.

Pretty tough to beat a .308 Win.

Caliber, anything from 22 cal on up can be effective on deer. I chose to limit myself to 25 thru 50 cal. The most effective is the one I have in my hand right now. If all my guns were to be stollen (or distroyed in a fire ect.) the first deer caliber I would buy would be a 7mm.

Cartigde, for me the minimum is a 222 with knowing its limitations. The most effecent start at about a 257 Roberts and go up to 30' 06. Larger and smaller will kill just fine just not as ' effecent' . In the catistrofic loss of above, I would buy a 7-08 first.

Wouldn' t trade in my Marlin Model 336 chambered in .35 Remington for anything.

Short and compact, 200gr rounds, great in the brush....i real pleasure to shoot.
