I have no idea where to post this, but, I figured here was as good as any place.

We were taking survival for our hunters' safety class. did you know that Pringles (the potato chip) makes great kindling. Just don't eat them first.

Here's hoping no one gets lost and needs to try it.

so do dorritos

jicand 02-27-2011 09:22 PM

simple chemistry, they're thin, dry, and all starch. Sugars burn like crazy once you get them going. Baked lays will work too. Actually any dry potato chip. Regular bag chips won't work only because they are so greasy.

yeah, jicand, I understand that. just never really thought about it until someone pointed it out. just like dryer lint. dang, that stuff is flamable. lol

If you ate a lot of potato chips, over the years,

you're probably only getting in the woods, some two hundred yards. anyways.

heh, dryer lint is great for starting fires. I bought one of those magnesium fire starters, total crap by the way, the magnesium burns way to fast, but a single spark from the striker sets dryer lint going. Showed my girlfriend and told her "see, this is why you clean the lint trap after every load." lol

Yes greasy chips do make for decent firestarters,
Would think carton tube pringles come in make a better kindling.
Other firestarters to consider is toilet paper,
When rolll runs low I usually take it out and carry that with me.
I also use lint from the drier, as its light and takes like almost no space.
If I plan on staying out more than 1-2 nights I also sometimes pack a couple sterno candles,
And of course paper /kindling don't help unless you have matches/lighter/mag stick etc..
