sorry for the confusion, but this one did gross scored 393"

I saw that picture posted earlier this year. I bet those things are heavy. Too bad they don't get that big here in TN :/

skillet01 02-22-2011 05:21 PM

Where them deer shot in pa??? Pic looks to have to much green for rifle season in pa. Maybe you hunt in the southern part of the state:confused0024:

That's the first thing that came to my mind when I read this thread last night but left it alone.

Considering a 14 year old shot two incredible bucks two years in a row with one grossing well over 200 inches and now the 393" sheds I'm gonna go out on a limb and say......... "probably".

I sincerely hope this young girl shot these two bucks somewhere in the mid west and is an incredibly lucky young girl and not some place like Liberty Hollow Whitetails 100 acre pen.

gunther89 02-22-2011 07:03 PM

There is no way that these are fair chase deer. If the 393 was a wild deer, it would have made news big time and would be the highest scoring deer ever in the wild!

Congrats to your 14 yr old!!!!! Why is that 393" deer not mounted and why do they look like they have been cut off? Sorry for the questions, just in shock on that one.

X2

If these were High Fence deer it would really be a let down. I always like to see when a youngster gets a really great deer let alone two but if they are high fence it kind of ruins the story.

With the other antlers that grossed that high, I feel like we would have heard about a free range buck that made it through hunting season that was that big. I remember that BIG buck a couple years ago that was running around Buffalo County in Wisconsin. It seems that every hunter in the midwest saw the video or pics of the video of that one. It was great that when that buck was harvested it was a local on a small tract of land. That was a great story as well.

I don't shoot pen raised deer but isn't it a common practice to cut there antlers off before the rut in order not to hurt themselves or other deer? If they were not planned on being tied to a tree, I mean released, for someone to shoot that year I thought they cut off the antlers soon after their velvet was shed. It looks like that big set of antler was cut off at the base but not sure.

Again, I really hope that these are wild bucks. Man, that would make for a great story! I spent 5 years looking for my first whitetail buck as a youngster and when I got my first buck (a five point) I couldn't have been happier. I can imagine if it would have been either of those brutes!

Can't bait in NY - its shares a pretty large border with Pa.

Also - and not a bash - a doe taken fair chase teaches a kid far more about hunting then a nonrealistic buck from
a preserve.

I hear you, but we all have to deal with crappy hunting circumstances from time to time. Until this year, I only had public land to hunt, and on public land, you constantly have your hunts “ruined” by other hunters. It’s just the way it is. Even on private land that I have to drive a good bit to get to, I have STILL had my hunts ruined by trespassers. It sucks and it pisses you off!! But that is what makes the kill that much sweeter. Getting up at 4am time after time, coming home empty-handed (for WHATEVER reason), and then finally bagging that deer. There’s nothing better! This is just my opinion, I think you could possibly be setting up your kid for disappointment by going from one extreme to another. Her killing those two bucks is very cool, but it might set up a harvest expectation that is not realistic, along with the fact that the deer, regardless of size, may be coming a bit easier than “normal.”

we cannot bait here in pa, but every other state around us can. if you hunt in those states, chances are your sitting over some sort of bait. is that fair chase?
West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Ohio ALL allow baiting? Virginia is a stone’s throw away from the southern border of PA, and we don’t allow baiting. Even where baiting is legal, I seriously doubt that most hunters are just sitting over a corn pile, waiting for a monster buck to show up. Those that hunt in states that DO allow baiting will tell you that hunting over bait isn’t nearly as simple as it sounds (i.e. it’s not necessarily a whole lot different than hunting an apple tree). I imagine that it’s the same with high fence hunting…to a degree. Now, where monster bucks are concerned, there is NO comparison between the two. Your chances of killing a monster buck on a high-fenced deer farm are much, MUCH higher than someone simply using bait.

Oh…keep in mind, posting something in a public forum and telling people to keep their opinions to themselves is like driving through a carwash with your windows down and expecting not to get wet.
