New Buck Scrape

I was out rabbit hunting Monday night when I came across a fresh scrape in a thick grown-up field. Didn't see any scrapes or sign there at all this season. Just seemed odd to see in the snow late in January. Plus last week I saw some rubs that had to be made this month early. Does anyone else see these late season scrapes? Could there still be doe in heat?

I also found a very fresh scrape 3 days ago. Through the snow, down to dirt. This new scrape was made in the snow the day after Christmas.

Dang thats pretty late? Don't bucks usually scrape during Pre Rut?

Yeah I thought it was late too, but they seem to be settled back into their regular activity again.

There will be scrapes and rubs here in TN until mid march. Our rut starts in November usually but can run through the end of January. We have had a late rut this year.

I went walking around looking for tracks today and found a small rub that wasn't more than a week old. I also know of two more rubs that are less than 2 weeks old on my farm.

Last year I had a scrape that had activity in it until late april...it seemed weird to me but I posted about it and had some people say that the deer use it as a means of communication and sometimes a scrape will stay open year round. The scrape I found didn't get used that much during the summer, but I could tell the deer were still checking out the overhanging branch and then it opened up in early fall and has stayed open again through the winter so far. We've had a lot of snow this year too in Northwest Wisconsin.
