223 for deer?

Ok, I know this can be a controversial subject. I know some guys say it's nuts when we have other calibers, but many say it's perfectly fine to use 223 as long as you choose the right bullet and are careful about your shots.

So what bullets DO you choose?

In a experts hands it will work but put in a beginners hands Or a weekend warurs hands HECK NO!!! If your not a expert shot and can't put the bullet exactly were it needs to go you have a wounded deer. The round is fully capable but there are far better choices out there

RR

Interesting. I would have expected heavier rounds to be the choices.

There really aren't any heavier rounds for this center fire .22.

Like other's have already said. It has no business being considered for a Deer cartridge.
We as Hunter owe our prey more then that. We owe them a clean swift kill. That is better achieved with a heavier, more powerful caliber.

It is a legal hunting round here in Idaho, I have seen many deer droped in there tracks with both a 223 and the 22-250. There are better suited rounds out there but dont under estimate the killing power of the 223 or the 22-250, with proper bullet and a well placed shot.

Not for me

Legal or not but IMO. I would not even consider shooting a deer with any caliber smaller then a 243 .
I,m sure there will be many different aproaches to this post .
But when you say 22 caliber I,m thinking fox , coyote , racoon. etc....

People hunt deer with a 357 mag, well a 223 and a 22-250 both have way more energy than a 357 mag does.

As a matter of fact, the late Jack O'Conner's wife killed her elephant with a 30-06 shooting a 220gr. solid.
The great elephant hunter Karmajo Bell killed over 1000 elephants with the 7x57 mauser. So yeah it can be and has been done many times over. Again bullet placement is the key. A deer will drop quicker from a well placed shot from a 223 than a bad shot from a 375 H&H or any other caliber. Again, BULLET PLACEMENT!!!!
