Coyote problerm!

We have a big problem with coyote around me, what is the best way to hunt them and what time of day or night?

cantrap 01-09-2011 02:40 PM

big pile of frozen meat in a field, and steak it out in a ground blind. night would be better if permitted. or ya can do some calling

dpj1030 01-09-2011 03:01 PM

Go to Hobby Lobby and get lil stirefoam balls about ehhh, almost as big as a golf ball. Soak them in Bacon Grease. Put them out on a trail you think there using and. They will swallow them hole and choke to death.

I am all for taking them out, but this is extreme in my opinion. how would you like to choke to death? horrible way to die.

Styrofoam sounds like wives tale. Could be true but just sounds too easy.

Wingbone 01-10-2011 02:24 AM

You can hunt them, you can trap them, you can poison them, you can feed them little styrofoam balls, but you can't exterminate them. Folks have been trying to control them for a couple hundred years and their territory continues to expand, not contract. Use it as another great hunting opportunity if you want, but don't kid yourself by thinking you can control them. They area fact of life. If they get too thick, the mange will reduce their numbers. The only time that I've heard of coyote numbers being reduced is when the wolves move in, and nobody wants that. Be glad you just have coyotes.

I am all in for killing them also, but I hunt them.
I don't feel any animal should suffer.

Backwoods7 01-10-2011 07:40 AM

Call em in and shoot them best way I've seen had to do it on my farm

salmondan 01-10-2011 08:26 AM

Check out hunting channels about predator hunting, lots of tips, tricks and advice, although I am just starting to hunt them this year so I cannot say a whole lot about this. I have killed one while turkey hunting and one deer hunting with my crossbow, that was cool. They are very sneaky so they should be a good challenge. I get busted by them more than I ever have by deer which really suprised me.

Hunt them at dawn & dusk (night with lights is best if legal), but trapping them is much quicker............and easier !

I have heard that it is really good to put put baut out like a dead cow or pig and hunt on a full moon. If it is a full moon you will be able to see through your scope enough to shoot them while they are eating.

Other wise there are people out there that love hunting them, and will come take care of them for you.

Remnard 01-10-2011 03:30 PM

styrofoam balls need to be 2" and they don't choke to death. It clogs up their digestive tract and they starve to death basically. Its a mean but effective way of eradicating them. Hunting is much more fun and humane.

fishtaconc 01-10-2011 04:01 PM

You can bait them in and shoot them if so desired, but move the bait because they will become shy of the bait, they become call shy as well.

BillBrasky 01-10-2011 07:46 PM

If you get good at hunting them, coyote removal is a great way to get on a farmer's good side for deer season :D

wibowhunter3989 01-10-2011 08:08 PM

Styrofoam balls sound like a good idea to me, as for those opposed saying they'll suffer, Shoot their lungs out and they choke to death too, all the same, wipe em out!

oldshedhunter35 01-11-2011 04:24 AM

Styrafoam balls I've heard it all now....

Difference is seconds compared to days.
Pity a hunter doesn't know the difference - or care.

markalfred1 01-11-2011 07:00 PM

choking to death seems too horrible... but at least there is no blood. ahaha

farm hunter 01-11-2011 07:34 PM

And immoral, and illegal and not target selective..... even if it made sense.

They wouldn't choke to death anyhow - more likely a skunk or possum would lick it off before a coyote would just gobble it up. Just a stupid comment.

Pro-Line 01-12-2011 02:16 AM

The foam balls will also kill a dog.

The yotes don't deserve to starve to death.

I cannot believe that someone actually said that a bullet through the lungs is the equivalent of starvation. Wibowhunter...that was an idiotic comment.

mortalcare 01-12-2011 01:46 PM

Get someone who enjoys hunting them and uses the pelts.

dpv 01-12-2011 06:21 PM

Trapping doesn't discriminate between yotes and dogs...or raccoons or other animals. I know because I did some trapping for spending money as a kid. Got 25 bucks for a racoon ( I didn't skin them out myself or I'd have gotten 50 bucks). But I also got dogs in my traps....and squirrels, and a crow...and vultures... and cats. Never got a fox or a bobcat. Where I grew up, feral dogs were a real problem....when I was squirrel hunting if I saw a pack of dogs, I would try to kill one.

ndrhunt 01-12-2011 06:45 PM

dpj1030, sir you give hunters and trappers a bad name, and make us all look like cruel bastards.

craze50 11-11-2011 08:21 AM

Call them in there is nothing like a rush when a big old coyote is running right into your call....

Bosley 11-11-2011 05:06 PM

I've never hunted coyote but if they were a problem on a farm I wouldn't mind seeing what I could do with my new Saiga 223. I went on a search for a mini 14 and found the cheapest one for around 500 used...well for that price I kept looking and ran across a lot of good reviews on the Saiga...

I haven't gotten it yet but it should be arriving soon.

That foam ball thing seems a little extreme unless your losing chickens nightly...otherwise I would hunt them more traditionally...stalking or with a call.

Though I tend not to be vituperative on this forum, I find your post offensive on so many levels it sickens me to call you a fellow hunter.
In the interest of sportsman's ethics I strongly encourage you to rethink your "advice" given so publicly.
