In 1983 I shot my first buck on 11-5 in the middle of drizzling rain with my fathers sporterized Mauser (8mm of course), the first to fall to it. It field dressed 158 lbs 10 pt. big woods buck. I had barely sat beneath my tree when he trotted to within 15 feet of me trying to figure out what I was. Not my biggest buck by far, but still my favorite.

Here are my two best. Both came this year one day apart. The 6 pt dressed at 160 lb and was shot at 20 yards and the 8 pt scored 136" and was shot at 189 yards with the T/C Omega. The only down side is my buck hunting has been over since late Oct cause we can only take 2 per season. :( but it was fun while it lasted. I even guided my new wife to her first buck she shot it at 15 yards. It has been and outstanding season to say the least.

Got this guy with my crossbow next to last day of the season, Sat down at 4 pm, Looked up here he came, turned walked 20 yards too far to shoot, stood there for 5 minutes, turned to walk up the mountain, turned again gave me a broadside shot at 33 yards walking, I aimed at the center of front leg, hit him right behind the leg and he walked 4 steps and fell over, Somehow I spined him.

Hunting on public land
Great news on your trophy. I too hunt public land and have for years. This year I got maps from MyHuntingLands.com and thought I had a spot no one else would be at. I guess the Amish kid that was there thought the same thing. I live in Summit county Ohio and am looking for some place close to fill a couple tags with my bow. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Deernailer |
I shot two bucks from public land that score about the same. This one I shot on Nov. 11 2010 with my bow.
![]() This one I shot opening day of the rifle season in 2009. He only scores 92" but he dressed out at 185#. ![]() I really like the challenge of hunting public land. I have a couple spots that produce action for both archery and rifle. It doesn't hurt that there is farmland bordering the public land that I hunt. |
