Jumping Dear
I was just wondering if anyone intentionally jumps deer to take a shot at them before they get away and use this as a normal hunting method. Also if so what are some tips to seeing the deer, checking out the horns and sealing the deal before he's out of there. Also would the deer stop if I whistled or yelled at them for a second because running shots can be tough at times.
The reason that I ask is because I always seem to bump into the biggest deer that would never be there any other day of the week I'd be hunting the area and it would be the biggest deer I'd see as of yet so if I could use that to my advantage... Also I was curious of this because the hunting pressure is so great in my area, every buck is being pushed around to the point of being impossible to locate in the northeastern mountains I hunt. Plus it doesn't help the whole mountain is hammered with acorns and the deer need to walk a foot to get stomach full it seems in some places so are never on the move. |
In conditions like that, I'd get a couple buddies to join me, and do a mini-push, hoping to bump one to them as they bump one to me.
Works pretty well with 3-5 guys, but not real well with more. Especially if the forest is fairly open, and you can see a little ways (100 yards or so) to make a clean shot. |
The two best bucks I have ever seen in the woods I walked in on. They saw me first and ran before I could even think about a shot. The best buck I ever got though, walked in on me after I stopped in a small field. My father-in-law were scouting around mid-day and stopped in a small field in the woods. While we stood there, a nice buck walked in on us.
I am not sure walking is a good method unless you are driving the deer to someone else, which is quite likely what you would do. |
Hitting a running deer in the woods with a rifle is going to have a low percentage success ratio. I've never had a lot of luck with it.

I do not take shots at running deer. I don't like seeing the headlines of hunters shot during drives.
