What would be a good gun?

I am looking at buying a new bolt action rifle. I am wanting an all around good gun. I might use it for big game such as bear or elk. I am looking at .300 win mag. I had a 30-06 and loved it but I got rid of it because I had a brain fart and traded for another gun. I am looking to extend my range. I think the .300 might do just that. I was also looking at the remington 700 BDL. Basically I was wondering what the general idea is about the .300 win mag or should I look at a 7mm. .308, 30-06 Those are the 4 I would like to choose from and I would also like to know what your thinkg about the Remington 700 BDL or is there a better gun out there. I would also like a gun I can customize. ie. maybe a bull barrel different stock, scope. etc.
Thanks

I personally think a 300 win. mag would be too big so dont go that crazy

Personally, and this is just my humble opinion, I'd go with a .270.

Have you considered splitting the difference and looking at a 7-mag? I hear those 175 gr nosler partitions are flat shooting and hell on elk and bears. I use a .308, but the cartridges I was really leaning toward were the .300WSM and the .270WSM, but I enjoy shooting outside of hunting and I wasn't about to shell out the extra money for ammo.

I agree and my next choice would be a 30-06, either in a 700 Remington of course.

either a 7mm mag or a 30-06. Either will kill big game as my father killed many many elk with a Remington .223 mini 14 rancher in Idaho.

Depending on how recoil sensitive you are but all are great i'd go 7mag or 308 but over all I'm a 270fan. The Remington 700 bdl is a great gun I've got 2 one in 270 the other in 7mm rem.mag if you like it get it all the rounds will work on anything in the united states if you do your part.

Which bears are you looking to hunt ?

You may just need that .300 WM you were looking at..............or bigger !!!

took a bull moose and 2 deer with my 7mag this year,my friend also used my 7mag to take his moose,i also have an 06 and have owned a 308.i like the 7mm rem mag the best.you might want to look at savage rifles, just as acurate at half the price of a 700.my 06 is a 700 my 7mm is a savage, the savage is more accurate.maybe its because of the cal but im sold on savage and the 7mm rem mag for an all around gun.

I'd 7mm Rem Mag in a Remington 700 or Savage. I wouldn't wanna bull barrel to go after, oh I dunno, anything.

I like a 308 myself. A 3006 or 300 all will get the job done. As far as a rifle, Thompson Center Icon is awesome.

I have an Remington Model Seven 7mm08 and I LOOOVVVEEEE that gun. I can't speak for the others, though.

I'd say 30.06,270 or the 280!
The 30.06 is the most versatile.
And if you don't reload I'd stay away from the 280,there are more factory ammo choices for the 30.06 and the 270.
If your looking for a mag. I'd go with the 300win. I've always liked the ballistics of the 300.
As for brand the 700 BDL is a great rifle, and some may disagree but I'm rather partial to the Win. model 70's I have several, and all of them will shoot less then an inch at 100 yards!

I would go 308 or 30.06. I have both and would hunt anything in the lower 48 with either. If i was going after big bears that would be the only case in which i would get a .338 or something bigger (brown bear, etc..) I just don't see any reason to deal with the recoil of a 7mmmag or 300 for deer or black bear. Alot will depend on the rifle thou, recoil pad... But i tend to stay with a lighter rifle, bolt action Savage, Winchester M70, or Remy. I have found that my savage weather warrior in 308 to be my favorite rifle.

I've used a Ruger 270 for years. Great all around caliber. I bought a Browning xbolt stainless stalker in 300wm last year. Love the rubberized stock and the recoil pad is very good. Ammo can be fairly expensive for the 300wm if you do much shooting at the range. I bought an AR15 for plinking practice.

pearsontx4 12-01-2010 06:27 PM

i just got a 270 bar safari i have shot a 30 06 and a 7mm out of the 06 and 7 i would go with the 7mm but i am headed out tomorrow to shoot a doe with a rifle for the first time in 5 years since i bow hunt so we will see how this 270 does

warbirdlover 12-01-2010 08:38 PM

I bought a .300 Win Mag M77 Ruger 15 years ago based on your logic and have never regretted it. It is NOT too much gun.
