Caliber of choice?

I hunt with a 3006. It's a caliber that I can shoot comfortably over and over again. With the newer bullets and powders available, under 500 yards an animal won't tell if it's hit with anything more powerful.
They drop like bricks.Military used it for half a century, the caliber has been an accomplished animal killer for 100 years and considering that the cal is the most popular hunting cal according to ammo sales, in North America, no more words need to be added. The record speaks for itself.

I use a Browning BAR 30-06 with Federal Premium ammo with Nosler Partition bullets. This combination has knocked down in their tracks almost every deer I have shot with it. Only a couple have run and they only went 30 to 50 yards and didn't even get out of sight.
Nice thing about the partitions is they hold together and blow a nice hole clear through the deer. Leaves a nice blood trail though I haven't needed it.

while i agree that all the calibers listed are great for deer size game (and BTW my favorite cals that i currently use are rem 260, 7mm-08, and for big fields i like my 7mmSTW) but please do yourself a favor and read the below post, it will save you a bunch of time and fustraition when deciding on the proper cal/gun....
you old timers can thank me later

encore 25-06, 120 gr positive expansion. Blows a hole for a blood trail and shoots flat. Last year my son shot a good buck and buried under the hide in the off shoulder after blowing about 3 inches of bone out of the other shoulder. Went less than 20 yards. Truth is there is no best caliber for everyone. I like low recoil and a good trajectory but a lot of recoil won't bother the next guy so he can have the short mags if he wants them.
