Oldster just wanted to know

Are any hunters using their cell phone gps' instead of using an older, stand alone, gps hunting one. Seems I heard of improvements on cell phones. Wonder if they are in effect, yet.

I'm still behind the curve a little. I still use a compass for navigation. They still don't need batteries.

I use my iPhone along with my compass. I have an application for it called Topo Maps, which is, as you guessed, topographical maps of the specific area you’re in. A blue dot represents me (accurate to within 130 feet, which is not stellar but close enough), and I can bring up a bearing display to find out what heading to use to get to where I want to go. I set the bearing on my compass and I’m good to go. I can also plot out a trip using waypoints, or I can drop “pins” on the map to mark certain findings, like a blood trail, rub line, a site for a good stand, etc. When marking a rub line or blood trail, it’s helpful to see the pins on the map so you can see the overall pattern. Pretty cool, actually.

But I could navigate fine with just a compass and a regular topo map (if necessary due to the size of the area).
