What does everyone think about on stand?

I know this is kind of a stupid question but I have the curiousity of a cat. What goes through ya'lls minds on a long sit with no book or texting etc.
I'm useally for the 1st hour or two playing the hunt out in my mind, different scenarios. Ok if the buck comes out here he'll be facing this direction at so and so yards and I need to place my shot here. If he comes out over here to my left It'll be angling away.........Basically visulizing nice bucks coming at me from different spots and what I'd do.
After around two hours of this I'll start to wonder about work, Trying out a new car wax on my ride, or working on suppin up my car. Again don't know really why I want to know,lol... what gets ya'll by on a long sit?

Beezer 11-10-2010 04:15 PM

"Are there any friggin' deer out here???"

DeerandbearhoG 11-10-2010 04:21 PM

One time I air guitared and sang the entire back in black album in my head while on stand. Sitting in a treestand hour after hour, day after day, you can get a little nutty .

eureka77 11-10-2010 04:34 PM

OK, I'm not the only one. I also sing alot of songs in my head too.

bayou_buckslayer 11-10-2010 04:44 PM

I usually reply hunting scenarios in my head lol, and i think about life and yeah my mind usually soars lol

bushanic 11-10-2010 04:47 PM

Dam! I should have gone to that other stand.

eureka77 11-10-2010 04:52 PM

Good! So far the concensus is I'm a normal hunter. lol. I do all these.

blueahlijr 11-10-2010 05:02 PM

I start out the same, first few hours try to visulize where they mite come from, where to shoot if they get in this spot... blah blah blah, then i start to plan ahead for next season, where i mite try to get permission for, where i could put a good lil food plot, where to set up another stand....

BPeterson 11-10-2010 05:02 PM

I often ponder what will be waiting for me on the dinner table when I get home! Also, lately the thought that has popped into my head here in Nebraska is, "I wonder how many mountain lion sightings have been near where I am sitting and why don't I ever see any!" Maybe they got the good stuff that I can't get my hands on or I have no good luck, who knows either way?!?!?

TeamWiscoUNIT61 11-10-2010 05:02 PM

I think a lot too. Good stuff and bad :x Past hunts, memories, worries about things I have to or should have gotten done lol. But to be honest I text a lot from the stand. I like taking pics of deer that come in and send em to my buddies. Then when it gets about half hour before sunset I focus in a little more cuz as we all know, thats showtime ;)

dtvburns 11-10-2010 06:00 PM

sex sex sex sex sex

jake1818 11-10-2010 06:05 PM

i have tendency to "talk" to the deer in my head if there out in the field im hunting over. sometimes ill ask smaller bucks to go find there dad for me, or for a doe to go bring a buck in for me LOL

WVCritter 11-10-2010 06:05 PM

What!!!..............No one thinks about women.........lol. I usually hit all the open spots with the range finder and sometimes I'll take a short nap if nothing is moving.

deerbiology 11-10-2010 06:23 PM

I occupy my mind memorizing, word for word, great outdoor stories for story telling around a campfire!

byg 11-10-2010 08:11 PM

I kinda do the scenerio of how they will come in etc.....But I think alot about "how many deer see my movements and just sneek on by never to be seen" or "dam, that tree looks better"
Then I tell myself "gotta be confident in your set up" LOL.....

doetrain 11-11-2010 02:53 AM

When I first get on stand I wonder how many I spooked coming in after hearing them scamper around in the heavy cover. Then I check all my gear my bow and hook up while I listen for movement before the light comes on. Once my pins light up I stand for the first hour or so scaning the area for movement,if nothing is going on I take a seat and delight in the glorious sunrise I just witnessed. The woods come alive with sounds, sights, smells and movement and I think what an awesome creation put on display for us to enjoy. The smell of bacon or sausage cooking, fireplaces burning good hardwoods it is a party for my senses,I hunt in a semi rural area. I offer up a prayer of thanksgiving to GOD and then I wait with vissions of success on my mind of a harvested deer and good eats later during Thanksgiving when the hunters in the Family bring the fruits of our labors. The only negative thing that creeps into my mind is when I think about the ending of the day,I really could stay all night at times. Great question, thanks for asking.

Or how to end deer hunting in America

Just get the computer nerd, the cell phone fanatic, the texting freak, the twitter affectionato, the face book lover, the forum addictive, to sit quietly and silently in a tree stand, for three hours, and you'll drive them stark, raving, mad.

snedd162 11-11-2010 04:42 AM

i sleep, then i take a piss trying to hit the 3rd rung on my ladder stand, try to hit the tree 10 feet from me with the flem ive been hacking up for 20 minutes, then i shoot the squirrels.......hmmm i wonder why i haven't seen anything yet this season

7.62NATO 11-11-2010 05:02 AM

“How many deer saw me come in? I know they ALL heard me!”
“Why do I always hear deer BEFORE shooting light??”
“It’s been light for an hour and no deer. I need to move.”
“Ooooo! I hear a deer. Nope, just another squirrel.”
“Are they watching me? Do they know I’m here?”
“My back hurts.”
“I’m not going to bother raising my gun. That’s just another squirrel. Oh crap! It was a deer!”
“Do I really have to pee? AGAIN????”
“I could reach out and touch that squirrel/rabbit/bird/other-critter-I-do-not-want-to-shoot; it has no idea I’m here.”
“I am frickin’ tired. I need some caffeine. That doesn’t make me pee.”
“Deer do not exist. Anywhere.”
“I’m horny.”
“If it’s brown, it’s down.”
“Where is my POA at 10 feet? Nah, my .50 cal would obliterate that squirrel. Not in habit of eating squirrel feet.”
“Screw this. I’m going still hunting.”

sussexhunter 11-11-2010 06:20 AM

the first five minutes usually involves intense focus. after that my mind wanders off into different thoughts about what is going on in my life. things im planning for the future. other deer i have killed in that spot. being up there in the stand is also like a sort of confession for me. I think about the ways i have handled different things and how i could be a little more christian about them in the future. I try to quiz myself on the different trees and to enjoy the sounds of nature despite the fact that those sounds are generally everything but a deer. I think about supper. I think about how much dang noise I will be making getting down with my noisy loggy bayou climber that makes my back spasm every half hour or so. then I think about how I dont have money for a new one. then I think about whether the deer have been hitting on my scents I have out or if they have been eating on my corn pile(if applicable). thats the tip of the iceberg. I will say that even without killing a deer, I come out of the woods with a clear head that most city folks pay thousands of dollars to a therapist for and will never have. Yes you are a normal hunter and probably more sane than most of the general population.

7.62NATO 11-11-2010 10:09 AM

"If I fart, will it spook them? I'm sure their farts make noise sometimes, but I bet they don't stink like mine do. When my dog farts, it smells like hell. But deer don't eat dog food. Or table scraps."

Champlain Islander 11-11-2010 10:46 AM

I think a lot about the hunt and life in general. I always enjoy the day. When I am hunting I can think about anything and everything.:cool2:

Buck Holliday 11-11-2010 11:35 AM

Ted Nugent said there would be hunts like this...

bigboyky 11-11-2010 12:18 PM

I never think about work! Usually I'll think this is crazy. It's too cold to be here I should have stayed in the bed with my wife or it's too hot the deer aren't going to move I should have stayed in bed with my wife. Then after the Sun is up I remember why I do it..... it's not about the deer I've taken, it's abut being out in the woods. I love being out on a crisp fall morning, seeing the woods come to life! Then around 10 Why am I out here again???? But I stay, I do it every year.

Duckbutter48 11-11-2010 12:25 PM

I usually think about how I wish I would have had a passion for something that involved warmer weather and getting out of bed later in the day like surfing or reef diving(neither of which I've ever done). Then I usually debate how long I can hold out before I eat my butterscotch krimpets....well that covers my 1st half hour in the stand anyway.

I then usually debate the fact if I am insane or not for being excited to get up at 330am to put a bunch of warm clothes just to sit in the freezing cold and hope to see a deer.

Mainly though, I think about my father who loved taking me hunting and passed away when I was thirteen years old(38 now)5 and how I didn't get to spend many seasons in the woods with him and what he might think of me now.

Jeff Ovington 11-11-2010 01:00 PM

I don't hunt from a stand myself. I'm glassing. While glassing I'm concentrating my mind on animals.See lots and lots of 200 class stumps and wish they were deer.I mind sometimes wonders to sex
actually happens alot. But the minute my mind starts to wonder
I bring it back to reallity. So it's hunting deer, wishing these stumps were bucks and bringing hot babes to orgasms. That's about it.

accman 11-11-2010 01:21 PM

In the vein of David Letterman's Top Ten, here we go.

TOP 10 THINGS I LIKE TO THINK ABOUT IN MY HUNTING STAND
10. Keep track of how many different positions I can get into in this God forsaken stand, while attempting not to have some part of my body turn numb and fall asleep.
9. Try to visualize what hunting would be like if I actual WON the freaking lottery and could afford the best of everything; gun, bow, outfit, the whole shlameel and then realizeI'd probably see just as much of nothin as I'm seein right now.
8. Just wonderin what I'd look like if I had my picture in Deer and Deer Hunting magazine holding up that 16 point buck's head, which has been in my mind for the past 48 years.
7. How the hell do they get ahold of that doe and make her secreat in a bottle.
6. Just as a stocking stuffer, I'm going to get my son a "Butt-Out" tool, and let his girlfriend try to figure out what it is. Aaahhh, nothin says Xmas like "Butt-Out"!!
5. I'd like to see if a deer really can't figure I'm wearing orange camo or not, just because he sure doesn't act that way. I must look like a giant pumpkin or something.
4. I've been known to say a few decats of the rosary while hunting. Just thinking that God'swatching and saying "Hey, he's praying down there! I'll just send him a nice big rack to see how much he shakes and misses. C'mon everyone, let's Watch!!!"
3. It's amazing how a song will get in your head, and how many times you let it go rightthrough it in a 12 hour day.
2. I've got 6 kids, so the crapola that goes through my mind in one day's hunt can fill up4 Garbage Trucks. Thoughts like tuition, real estate tax payments, con freaking ed, doctor bills, tuition, leaky roofs, honey do's, income taxes, do I have any gin left?, what's on TV tonight, did I mention tuition, what's for supper?, I need an automaticmachine gun for these #$%*'n squirrels, HE's Your Boyfriend??, what year is this?
1. I listen to the ever changing woods which sometimes comes to life from a dead quiet, dead calm to a hustle and bustle like Grand Central Station from birds, squirrels, bugs, wind, back and forth, in and out, all day long, and THAT's what keeps me coming back for more.
And seein some freakin deer would be nice too!!!!!

allflockedup 11-11-2010 03:38 PM

i think how nice it would be to come home and the kids are gone for the nite and its just me and my women and then i realize fat chance and think about different hunting situations and were i should have put this stand

ihookem1 11-11-2010 03:54 PM

Honestly, I think about past hunts and where I hunted over the years, the deer I shot and the ones that got away. I start thinking the night before gun season when I'm up in the loft, everyone is sleeping and I recall some of my earliest hunts with dad. Then I figure out how old I was and it dawns on me how many years ago that was and realize I am not young anymore. My thoughts go back well over 40 years. Then the next morning I think a whole bunch about God and my savior Jesus Christ and how he could have created such beauty in the blink of an eye. How amazingly perfect! A chickadee, upside down picking a hemlock cone. A mouse, a grouse, maybe a big red headed wood pecker, sometimes even a deer, perhaps the most amazing animal on earth created just for us. I wonder how it can get more beautiful. Someday it will because of Gods promise to me. "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind as imagined what Got has in store for those who love him" 1 Corinthians 2v9.

Krypt Keeper 11-11-2010 04:20 PM

scarredup300 11-12-2010 05:55 AM

was it this cold when i left the truck, how much money is the wife spending shopping while im up here, if i could get that chipmunk to drink a energy drink would it run in the same crazy random circles , and last but not least if i was to catch a hawk could i train it to catch these friggin squirrels for some slow time entertainment

MD DEERHUNTER 11-12-2010 06:32 AM

I usually sit in my stand looking at every possible hole in every bush to see if I see any movement whatsoever. I constantly have my head on a swivel trying to figure out what direction that deer might come from. I say to myself..."if he comes from that this direction I'll wait till he passes this tree and then he's getting blasted. Then by late afternoon when I haven't seen anything move but some damn birds in the thicket making all kinds of noise I say to myself...." Damn! The deer aren't moving, I having seen ****!" "My knees, my back, my ankles are killing me!" Then I start thinking about being at home, sitting on the couch next to that warm heater in my sweats watching college football and drinking a cold beer. Then I say to myself..."I'M OUTTA HERE!" "I'll try again tomorrow."

BarnesX.308 11-12-2010 09:17 AM

1 - Deadlines at work
2 - Bills I owe
3 - Unfinished chores at home
4 - How much it's going to suck to leave the hunting camp and go home to reality.
5 - Repeat above

:D :D

Chuck7 11-13-2010 12:31 AM

GOD...

I bring my New Testament and have hunted like this with much success..

I read 20 chapters total in my stand..

Read 5
Give a deer call

Read 5
Deer call

By the last call it's about 11:00

Other things I think about..
SCAN SCAN SCAN..I never hear deer ..they sneak up ..so I read a couple verses...meditate on them and scan. If I see a deer I slide the New testament down my shirt and get on that deer.

I think about God all the time.

ihookem1 11-13-2010 12:49 AM

Yo Chuck you ain't the only one. I get more deer and bear with my little bible in my hand. I think it makes time go by without being bouncy..
