what works for me and I swear by them. Go to wal-mart and by the box of 15 shells of winchesters for $9.00. 2 3/4" and I have 2 870 wingmasters 12ga and 20 ga shooting smoothbore deerbarrels. shoot them out to 100 yards off a bench and you should be impressed.

is your 870 barrel rifled?

2robinhood 11-08-2010 02:24 AM

Our question is what kind of barrel ?
A field barrel, a smooth bore slug barrel, a rifled barrel ?

mossberghunter93 11-08-2010 04:03 AM

If its a rifled barrel I'd say go with Remington Copper sabots 2 3/4. They lay the smack down for me out to a little over 100 yards. If its not rifled then tell me how far your practicing cause 100 yards may be kinda tough to accurately hit with a non rifled barrel.

I have a Remington 870 20 gauge with a full rifled barrel and a Mossberg 935 12 gauge with a full rifled barrel.
Remington Premier cooper solids were my choice till I tried Remington Accutip slugs.
They are great.
Very, very fast and very, very accurate.
They shoot very well for me out of both guns.
I am in a 3" circle at 100 yards and I wouldn't hesitate to shoot 130-140 yards.

Try the Hornady sst sabot round, it works great in both my 24'' smooth bore and 24" rifled barrels

lifesadrag 11-08-2010 04:27 PM

I shoot Federal sabots out of my rifled 870. They shoot the best out of my gun.

Jeff50316 11-08-2010 04:43 PM

Yep what type of barrel do you have rifled, smooth, is it a Remington barrel or the mossberg?

blackhawk_archery 11-08-2010 05:54 PM

man I would never take a remington slug out in the woods with me,cost be a 250 pound plus 12 point buck one time and cost my cousin a 10 point buck, pull the trigger and all you hear is click, click I moved to winchester slugs.

it has a rifled barral I tried horndays too and no luck and I had to put anouther shot in a buck a few years ago with remington slugs and my buddy lost a couple deer with them too thanks everybody

Blackhawk, are you talking about the new acu-tip by remington? because i have shot hundreds of the foster style 1 ounce slugs with no problem!

e40 11-09-2010 08:40 AM

I never hear anyone talk about them, but I have used Winchester standard velocity sabot slugs with excellent results in my fully rifled 870. Accurate and will go through a deer at 100 yards. I would think that they would cleanly harvest a deer out to 120 yards, I just don't ever get a shot that far. I have shot at game or targets more than 150 times over 15 years and never had an issue with accuracy or effectiveness.

my gun likes the 3in winchester partition golds and the 2 3/4 hornady sst's seem to shoot nice out of it as well. the 2 3/4 xp3 though will not group for me very well. those are the only ones that will group for me. found my winner lol. my dads 870 likes the federals pretty well.

snedd162 11-09-2010 10:41 AM

hornady sst, work best in my 870

Chuck7 11-09-2010 04:47 PM

I use the 870 Mag. 12 guage..and fresh out of the box..I agree ..It stunk..so I took an experts advise and bought the Gobble Dot sights from Cabelas to shoot it in for turkey.WOW!!!!what a difference..Then I put in my improved cyklinder choke and I was mouth opened in shock at the 3 inch groups at 100yds..I honestly could not believe the binoculars..I thought maybe it was luck so I kept shooting..I am very happy..At 50 yds they were tighter than 2 inches..I'm using it this year when I hunt in thick places.

I was using the cheap Walmart 2 3/4 inch WInchesters..they work wonderfully

i use the lightfields and so does every one else i know with a 870, h&r, whatever you got i love lightfields. i tried the hornady sst, they were ok. i also hear of a brand called fusion? i dont know to much about them but they might be worth a shot.
