Default Muzzleloader question

I bought a CVA Wolf .50 cal. yesterday. I aint scoped it yet but i am before black powder season. Would 100 grains of 777 pellets and a 245 grain powerbelt areotip be enough "umph" to cleanly kill a deer at 150 yards or should i try 150 grains of powder? Thanks

You should have the power, but I've heard a lot of bad stuff on the PB's about their ability to cleanly kill deer.

I would recommend following the maufacturers recommendations first then tweaking your setup from there. Never go over the max recommended load. And if they say it can take 150 grains of powder don't assume that is the best amount to use. Some guns are more accurate with a little lighter powder charge and bullet combination. It helps to talk to your friends and see if you can swap a couple of bullets and powder charges so you don't always have to buy a full container of powder and bullets. Play around with different setups to see which one your gun likes the best.

I have shot 100 grains of pyrodex and a 250gr. sabot round out of mine, and have had passthrough shots at 150 yards.

A couple of guys here at work just started using blcakhorn 209, and swear they will never use anything else. I have not tried it yet since I am already dialed in on with my current set up, but will before next year.

70grains of black powder and a patched round ball is sufficent for deer IMO, so your load is more than enougn. I too dont have much love for the powerbelts , im more of a fan of sabots and sst or xtps

Owerbelts are all I use I shoot 110grs of 777 and a 295gr powerbelt aerotip have killed deer from 50 yards all the way out to 140 yards all 1 shot kills most droped on the spot had one go 30 yards. Your load should work but personally I like heavier bullets lilt 270gr-300gr. I'm sighted in 2in high at 50 yards and at 125 IM right at dead on.

No question, get the Vortex Viper 2-7x32. They are on close out for around $169, which is about half off list. For that money, nothing comes close IMO.

BTW, you might consider asking in the Blackpowder forum below for more specifics on muzzleloaders.

Just for comparison, the Viper is in line with the Nikon Monarch and Bushnell 4200 in terms of glass quality. With a better warranty.
