I'm shooting a 7mag. One stand I prefer is max 350 yards. This season my greens are in a area with a max of maybe 30 to 40 yards. Which is making me rething my weapon. Last year was my first year deer hunting. The very first hour in the stand on my very first hunt I took my longest shot of 185 yards frontal shot right between the shoulders. Not anyone's preferred placement but giving the circumstances of my first hunt and first deer, I took the shot and made it clean. Exited out the opp side with no gut shot. I was very excited and the rest of the season was consumed with trying to get a chance at a longer shot.

Ruger 77 Mk II all-weather .300 Win Mag for 15 years.
Next year it will share duty with the Remington 700 SPS Buckmasters .270 Win I just bought.

There are SOOOO many adequate deer rifles out there.. Much depends upon the terrain you hunt...
My current favorite is a Rem M700 mountain rifle in 7mm08... The scope is a Burris 2x7 and it works fine in the woods or in the open country out to 300 yards or so..
If I am hunting the wide open spaces, I use a Winchester M70 in .280 Rem with a Leupold 6x fixed power...

I personally shoot a 700 mtn rifle in .280 w leupold. I bought it in '87, and have shot a ton with it over the years. I use hand loads w/ 139gr hornady's, its amazing. I wouldn't hesitate to use it on any game I'd ever hunt. I don't even have another deer rifle, other than my m/l.
I also feel that possibly the BEST all around deer cartridge might be the 7mm-08. If I were to buy another one ever, that might be it. Either that or a .260 rem which I like alot too.

I suppose my favorite is the one in my hands when the deer walks by, so long as it's loaded.
For years and years I used an iron-sighted Winchester 94 in 30-30. Then, as I began hunting less in the mountains and more in field country, I started alternating between a 30-06 and a .270. Five or so years ago I put the 30-06 on semi-permanent loan to a friend, which makes the Ruger .270 my "go-to" rifle.
Barring strange circumstances, I'll use it for the rest of my life.

Maybe I can sell one of you guys my almost new RCBS 7mm-08 precision mic, LOL. I sold all my reloading stuff years ago and found that in my gun cabinet this weekend. Might have been used twice.
