The Winchester '94 30/30 was one of my first rifles. I got to the point where I could shoot certain leaves off of trees at fifty yards within 5 second time intervals. This rifle just improved my all around shooting skills.

Ruger M77 in .308 with a Redfield 2-7x on top. Had it since 1979 and it's always done its part.
My only back up would be my White .504 Ultra Mag muzzleloader, which is more than accurate enough for the sub-100 yard shots that we usually get where I hunt.

Ruger M77 Mark II .243. My first was a H&R 20 ga slug gun (too freakin heavy for a 13 Y.O.), Next was a Ruger .44 mag. Then my .243. I love and still have all 3. They all 3 kill deer with ease and all have thier place. I was lucky that my papaw was a firearms dealer!!!!

There are SOOOO many adequate deer rifles out there.. Much depends upon the terrain you hunt...
My current favorite is a Rem M700 mountain rifle in 7mm08... The scope is a Burris 2x7 and it works fine in the woods or in the open country out to 300 yards or so..
If I am hunting the wide open spaces, I use a Winchester M70 in .280 Rem with a Leupold 6x fixed power...
