Hard to convince newbies sometimes
There isn't just "ONE" suitable rifle or cartridge, for harvesting deer. When I sold hunting rifles for a time, it was never what I used. It was one that the prospective hunter was interested in. And as long as it was one of some fifteen calibers, I could honestly say to them. "Now that is one great deer rifle you picked out."

When I was 16 in 1968, I bought my first hunting rifle with the help of my uncle at Brooks Brothers, a 1908 Model Mannlicher Shoenauer, 6.5 x 54, 155 gram bullets, and it's the only gun I use for hunting. It's compact and light to carry, feels like a toy, packs a wallop, and brings back enough memories to last a lifetime. Granted, finding ammo for it has been a b-otch, but it will always be in my hands when I down a deer. My son, for his first gun, bought a browning A-bolt 270 bout 7 years ago, and he swears by his choice.

I got a Marlin 30-30 topped with a Redfield 4X scope when I was 14 yrs old. 22 years later, it's still my primary deer rifle. I usually hunt a pretty thick area during gun season where the longest shot might be 60 yards. It's perfect for that.
Occassionally I'll hunt a field edge where I very well could have a 200+ yard shot. There I'll take my old Savage 7 mag with Swift 4.5x14 scope.

Browning A-Bolt All Weather in 30-06 topped w/ a Simmons 4 x 12 -44 Mag. I can take head shots at 200 yrds, and have video to prove it. Then I guess I'm like everyone else and the ole 336 30/30 to fall back on.

Custom built rifle that shoots 7mm Mauser. My grandpa's neighbor used to be a pretty well known gunsmith and he built it for someone and they never came to pick it up or pay for it. My grandpa bought it quite a few years ago and it is what I have always used. I need to refinish it some day because it is starting to show its age. It is a fine gun in my opinion.
