If I'm hunting just deer and nothing else, I use my .270 because it's my favorite of two centerfire rifles. If I'm hunting deer AND elk, I use the .30-06 because it has a tiny bit more stopping power than the .270 and elk is a large animal.

I do believe the .270 would fare fine against an elk; shot placement is everything. However, I also think that if I fail to do my part behind the rifle a little bit, but still hit, the "ought six" might make up for it a tiny bit.

Husqvarna 3006. Is my choice.
My next choice would be my .311 Canadian Imperial Magnum
for my cross canyon shooting.

Ask an old timer who was big on reloading knowledge. He said that if you couldn't kill it with a 30-06 you ott be running from it!

remington 700 bdl dm in .30-06 shooting 165 grains. Love the detachable magazine, golden when you load/unload a bunch during the day doing deer drives/climbing up/down stands.

Custom built 7mm-338 with a Mauser 98 action, Jewell trigger, Shaw No. 2 Stainless barrell, glass bedded action and custom thumbhole stock with diamond in-lay in forearm. It took me 2 years to build and with my handloads of Hornady A-Max projectiles will lay down deer at distances I won't say on open forum. I just have the videos to back up what I say. If I am hunting in my home state of Il, I use a Knight Disc Extreme or my Magnum Research Ind. Lone Eagle in 44 Mag or my S & W .460.
