Where to put treestand?
 

Should I put treestand next to river between two fields or in deep woods? There is sign in each spot.

It really depends. Whats in the fields?? If they are crop fields then maybe, but if the deer are hitting the acorns then the woods.

Sounds to me like you can't go wrong either way. But I myself like to hunt on the edge of streams and rivers. I hunt in Southern Maryland on the edge of a stream and see plenty of deer. Try to find a spot where they're crossing the stream and setup about 40 yards from that crossing point.

If there is sign at all three places I would start in the timber. Times that you are able to hunt maybe a factor also. Get right in the middle of their business, and find out what they do everyday.

There are lots of things you have to look at. How big of a river? Im guessing not too big, with a fast current or you wouldnt think about setting there. If you have had a really dry summer it wouldnt be a bad sit, but like everyone else said the acorns are an awesome place to start. If your "deep woods" has good sign, and something to keep them there thats where I would be. It is getting to be that time of year where the deer are worried more about other things than just eating and sleeping. Where I am its not uncommon for them to spend several days in a row without even leaving the corn field. If they have a water source, food source, and a place to bed they are happy.

If you sit in the woods and it is a good spot and far enough from the river, it wouldnt hurt to think about putting a small watering hole nearby during the offseason. Another thing to keep them in an area they already like...

10-20 yards into the woods, near a corner and just off the main trail.
