Baiting Whitetails?
 

I own property in Quebec, and hunt it for whitetail deers among other things. Recently, I was hiking on the trails on public land that borders on my property, and found a hunter putting literally hundreds of apples everywhere surrounding his treestand. I'm worried that this will lure the deer out of my land; is this a justified worry? And also, is this even legal?

I'm not sure of the legality of that but, you may want to check your local game laws.I do believe that you are justified in your worries but I wouldn't let it discourage you.You are a hunter and are going to do just that.Like in all hunting situations nothing's guaranteed and just about anything could happen(for good or bad).You may actually benefit from this in ways such as,deer aren't always eating(especially during the rut) but, also that hunter might bump those deer to you on his way to his stand.It is said that deer won't bed down far from where they eat,that they'll eat alot then go lay down and chew their cud,but it may take only one encounter with this hunter to "push" these deer to you.They may even need to cross your property to get to his bait.Chances are that there are some nice bucks around and I'd bet that once the rut hits they'll eat quickly and be on the chase for their girlies.The more food energy they get should only be a boost for a fast paced rut,so be ready.Depending on the wind direction and the distance between yours and his stands you might be able to play his wind in your favor.I think you'll score this year.Let us know if you have any more questions.BTW I live/hunt in New York and have no experience with "baiting" as it is ILLEGAL here but am just going on what I know/think to be accurate.Good luck!!!!:wave:

Laws are different in every state, let alone our neighboring country. I would check with your local wildlife office. Either way, that hunter is a cheap slob.

Baiting has been illegal everywhere I've lived.

And yet its legal in many many places (its legal on my lease in Maryland, but illegal at my home in Virginia).

In my county in Virginia it legal to bait thru the summer for cameras and so on but has to be gone by September 1st. With CWD showing up in Nortwest Virginia it will by outlawed here soon also I bet. If it slows the spread I'm all for stoping it. I use a corn feeder here to set up cams but pull them as soon as acorns start dropping.

Well it's either legal
 

to feed those deer apples; or it's illegal to feed those hunted deer anything.

And if you can't inform the law on violations, you'll just have to put up with it.

Do they still have those mounties with red coats out in the forests of Canada?

Him hunting over bait doesn't mean he will take a deer.
The deer may visit the area more since the food source, but he could sit for weeks and not get anything.

CWD is the reason they made baiting and feeding deer illegal in Vermont. It hasnt showed up here yet and hopefully never does. Fish and Game asked hunters not to use urine here this year as the places its produced have no regulation and if infected with CWD could remain in the soil for 3 years.

Not sure about Quebec, but here in Ontario baiting is Legal ( for now ). That may change, because as deer harvest numbers decline, too many young deer a being shot as compared to mature ones.

Check with your local wildlife officer.
I know its not legal to bait deer on public land in N.C.
If its not legal, tell the wildlife officer where the stand is.
