Need opinions..PLEASE RESPOND
All of you Deerhunters that use a portable climbing treestand. What do you like/dislike about them, and what would you change if you could?
Thanks |
RE: Need opinions..PLEASE RESPOND
I haven't used one yet, but I probably will be next year. I was going to post the same question. Because just two weeks before deer season last year, the tree that holds my permanent stand(which I built myself and modified to an acceptable;if not excessive, level of comfort over the last fifteen years)
was toppled by some 75 mph winds. So thanks for asking my question for me, and I'll keep checking in for info. |
RE: Need opinions..PLEASE RESPOND
i used to hunt alot out of permanent stands. i like that the portable stands can be moved as the deer patterns move and also they're not an eyesore if anyone sees them in the summer, b/c they're taken down and put in your garage

RE: Need opinions..PLEASE RESPOND
I think the big advantage is in the name given to them portable.
I have seen deer look for hunters in permanent stands. The only thing I might not like about them is, if you have to move, even if you try and be as quiet as possible, you may spook a big buck. |
RE: Need opinions..PLEASE RESPOND
hey the first time a deer is feeding DIRECTLY below you. i mean you could spit on it, you will be hooked.

RE: Need opinions..PLEASE RESPOND
Portability is the key word! Being able to move to where the deer are, is what makes the climbers worth the money!
Soarkrebel hit it too! Being close enough to a deer to touch it, is AWESOME! I still use permanent ladder stands and box stands, but when things get slow, pull out the climber! The best buck I ever killed, I was sitting in my climber, about twenty yards from one of my permanent ladder stands! I actually think that the empty ladder stand acted as a decoy! He looked right at that stand and saw that it was empty. He would have busted me if I had been sitting there, but he never noticed me just a few yards away in my Treelounge! BTW, there are many good climbers on the market, I just prefer the Treelounge! Climbers are well worth the investment, Good luck! |

I have an old model Treelounge, it is heavy and I had to repaint it every year. They supposedly have taken care of both of those problems. I don't know, but it is the most comfortable stand I know of, but I would like to know if it is still loud during assembly around a tree?

RE: Need opinions..PLEASE RESPOND
The ability to hunt from many different positions give a lot of flexibility and it is great.
The only down sides as far as I'm concerned is that you will make a bit more noise getting set up and it will take more time than just getting to a permanant stand and being ready to hunt right away. I have an API Grand Slam Magnum Super Supreme because I am a big guy. And I have really enjoyed having the flexibility this year. |
RE: Need opinions..PLEASE RESPOND
I prefer hang ons with screw in steps any time I can use em.But when you're on public land that aint allowed so I have a loggy bayou lite. Its not bad for a climber but all climbers make some noise and you gotta have the right tree. Been looking at Lone wolfs climber with the nylon, plastic or whatever climbing band. Anyone out ther have one? how do you like it?

RE: Need opinions..PLEASE RESPOND
The advantage to climbers is that they are easy to move to another location.I have a couple of Treelounges. They do make some noise when setting them up. Once you get use to using them you can keep the noise to a minimal. It takes some time getting use to climbing and coming back down. After a little practice it becomes easy. It only takes a few minutes to set them up and be in your hunting position. I have had my one Treelounge (old version) for 9 years. At first I thought it was more trouble then it was worth. After using it for awhile it becomes a second nature. I would recommend talking to hunters who have different types of climbers and see if you can try them. Everybody has different opinions which are best. You need to try them and decide what's best for you. I like my Treelounges even though my new version has a tendency to slip. Whatever stand you decide on, buy yourself a good Safety harness and use it.Ruger Redhawk

I have used a warren and sweat rifeman climber for the past,I guess 20 years.I also have one of there muzzeloaders stands.they both are great stands and after a while you can put them up in a couple min. with little noise.
I have added padded seats to both and that has made a big difference.I have one more that I got from a hunter who needed money. all three cost me less than one treelounge. I like a climber because you can move about and on public land you can't use others. I am not a hunter I am a whitetail population reduction specialest remember keep your back to the sun, your knife sharp, and your powder dry. |

I started out with one of those yard sale homemade stands. At the time I thougt it was the greatest thing In hunting. Now that I have been hunting for a few years now I would suggest that you find one that is easy to carry and that is comfortable to sit in for hours. I have a summit shooter pro that is 5 years old now. It is comfortable but heavy. Buy the lightest most comfortable one you can afford! Don't forget to budget in the price of a good saftey hornest. Don't waste your time or money on a homemade stand. They may look safe but chances are they aren't. I had a few close calls with my first one. And not a single close call with the summit.

I also have not used one yet,but I will.
I have a perminent stand, which is great for early season muzzleloader. After a couple of weeks deer seemed to move only about forty yards from me in heavy woods and all I could do is sit and wish I had a portable stand. clint foland |
RE: Need opinions..PLEASE RESPOND
The best thing is you move them around hence the meaning portable get one that is light wieght but the lighter it is the less wieght it will hold i also like the fact that it does not damage the trees landowners get awful mad at people using screw in steps and nails plus in P.A. that is illegal with out the landowners permission. The downfall I know is becareful what kind of tree you set it on if you try to climb a popular tree or other slippery bark tree you might find yourself on the ground real fast. cold weather is dangerous also got to watch the ice on a tree . Also some real good hunting spots might not have any trees or no good trees to set up on. overall i love portable tree stands. Get out and hunt and take a youngster with you :)

RE: Need opinions..PLEASE RESPOND
Portable and climbing don't go together for me. When I hunt, I use portables only. I do have a climber, and its in my back yard tree to practice from ! A portable stand is
A)light B)highly portable C)quiet and easy to put up D)you can put them in about any tree around, not just the ones that are five gallon bucket size and limbless. E)you can hide a portable from the deer, a climber seems to stick out like a sore thumb F)cost Ya'll wantr me to go on :) |
RE: Need opinions..PLEASE RESPOND
Well, like the folks said, the biggest advantage is mobility. I still prefer to hunt in hang ons and permanent when I can, but it's a necessity to own at least one, in my opinion. As for noise, I can get up in my summit cobra a lot quieter than anybody can screw in a bunch of steps and hang a loc-on, guaranteed. You won't hear me climb from 40yds away, and on most trees, from 25yds. The newer ones are real quiet.
Also, safety is a big factor. It's easy to wear a harness the whole way up, and never be seperated from your safety line. No slippery steps either. No stolen stands on public land, and nobody can hunt your spot without bringing their own stand. However, like I said, I prefer fixed stands, because it's 20 less pounds I have to carry in. You don't sweat as much just climbing a ladder, so you can wear heavy clothes on the way in. I own a climber, a few hang-ons, a ladder stand, and a pop up ground blind, as well as a half dozen permanent stands. Every year I find uses for all of them. |
