I have killed with the basic federal sabots. If you have a rifled barrel with a moderate twist you aren't going to benefit much with a super fast round anyway. May I ask what you are shooting these slugs out of?

lots of good slugs out there, Hornady, lightfield, Remingtonm winchester..... I ve never used federal so i really cant say with any certaintly. With slug guns each gun is going to shoot differently so your going to have see what yours shoot best. A cheaper sabot that i was really impressed with out to 100 yards (thats all i shot it out too) was the remington buckhammer.

I will second the 20 gauge with Federals.

The goal is to limit your shots to 50 yards or less, which is for the most part the objective of hunting with a shotgun and slugs.

If you was to keep your shots to 50 yards or less, I wouldn't even mess around with sabot's. I would just buy regular old punkin balls.

Most deer are shot under 50yds is true. Modern sabots and punkin balls are two worlds apart. In 2005 Iowa a hunter shot a 8pt buck at 242 yr'ds one shot to the head with Hornady sst slug 12ga. The deer droped and didn't move. Check Hornadys website.
I've shot them ever since. I am not afraid to take a 150yd plus shot, if conditions are right.

I use Remington accutip slugs out of my 12 ga. and 20 ga.
I sight in at 100Yards and feel comfortable to shot to 125-130 yards.
