Calling

My questions are: When to start using the grunt calls,beginning of season, during pre-rut or rut ? 2nd question is do deer grunt when it is dark out, early morning?

less is more in some of the places I hunt and never in others. Only places with a lot of deer is calling more of a help than not.

Competition I think is the determining factor.
