Dipping Wintergreen while deer hunting?
Ok,so i dip Copenhagen Wintergreen. Will the smell scare the deer away? Or do they like that smell? Thanks
I have dipped Skoal wintergreen on stand for more than 30 years. I don't know if the deer like it but I sure as heck do so I'm going to be dippin' this year too. I shot a doe once that "tracked" me to the stand from where I was spitting on the walk in. I have read somewhere that they don't like wintergreen tho. Hope that helped.

my dad dips longhorn wintergreen we've never had a problem.... and larry benoit the author of the book how to bag the biggest buck in your life says he chews redman while hunting because he thinks the deer like the smell of the mollases in it.... but smoking while hunting to me seems to be a bad idea because the smell is so unusual
I've had them spook at the spot below my stand that the spit seems to land. I don't let a deer I want to shoot get that close though. Overall, it probably deos not help.
For some reason I dont chew that much unless I'm hunting but when I'm chewing I usually have a empty bottle with me and use that. I hunt out of Box Clinds when I rifle hunt so its easier just to use a bottle. Ive used a bottle in a stand as well as just spit it on the ground, never have had a problem.

My 62yo uncle smokes while he deer hunts. I spend countless hours and money on scent control and he smokes.
Last year he shot a giant 6x6. I got a few doe. He thinks I'm crazy and I think the same of him. |
i am a smoker until deer season rolls around and then i dip grizzly wintergreen longcut. i don't think it bothers them much because i've never gone without deer meat
I know people who have said they had to put there smoke out to draw there bow. I don't smoke but it doesn't seem to bother those deer at that time. Don't know about the next one.
I've never noticed them caring one way or the other. Definitely never seen one spook because of it, but you never know what the ones did that you didn't see.
I have a friend thats hunts Brown County, IL with us every year on opening day........he takes leaks off his stand, smokes non-stop, drinks coffee, and coughs incessantly (from the cigarettes of course)... and that lousy SOB is the first to down a deer every year! So the cover scent combo of Malboro and Folgers works well...lol
And he does it from a 12' ladder stand. |
i have had at least 5 different deer come under my stand and start lickin the spit but i dip copenhagen
I shot my biggest buck last year with a cig hanging out of my mouth. He was downwind too. They really aren't as smart as everyone makes them out to be.
Deer are Chris Ledoux fans and they're aware that smokeless is the best way to kill and prevent worms. I haven't had trouble from ground blinds...

edit: To add, I think all of the scent control stuff varies depending on what the deer are used to smelling. If they're around people year round, smoking, etc is already part of their environment, but if you're far back out of the way, it's probably more foreign to them. One place I bowhunt is covered with biking and hiking trails. I probably need almost no scent control there because the deer commonly step 50 yards into the woods to watch people go by. ;) |
I bet Skoal Apple Blend would be more like a lure wouldnt it? Because it smells just like apples.......

I had a buck about turn inside out when he put his nose to the ground below my stand one time. Whether he smelled the Copenhagen or my scent, who knows? I spit in a bottle while gun hunting (put it in the front of by coat to reduce movement), but take my chances and spit on the ground while bowhunting.
I dip grizzly wintergreen to. I once had an 8 point walk under my tripod and took one sniff where i had been spitting and bolted. I really dont think it bothers them cause i have never had any deer spook by smellin it or any of them blow at me from smelling it besides the one that actually sniffed the ground where i spit at.

I made this same statement on another thread a few days back asking what woudl you tell young hunters they need to learn to be successful. One poster said scent control. My reply was scent control is religion to some and ignored by some. with the example; I have a buddy that he and his dad have a trophy wall and his dad smokes like a train, and camo is whatever set of hunting clothes they have laying around.
Me, Red Seal Wintergreen Fine cut :-) |
I dip grizzly mint and sometimes apple skoal and havnt ever spooked a deer because of that. The only scent control I use is the scent killer washing detergent. The only cover scent I use is either vanilla or tinks69 and the smell of grizzly
im a grizzly wintergreen dipper and ive always asked myself the same question. the other day i was dippin and had 9 deer come within 20 yards. i think it just varies on how jittery those particular deer are at the time. if theyre on edge, then anything will spook em. the only deer i saw that kept stickin their noses in the air were two fawns that came into my bait and i was surprised bc i do the scentless shower, scentless clothes wash, scentless deoderant, scentless spray and this year i actually bought a brand new scentlok suit so it did make me wonde if they smelled the dip.

Dipping is bad for you....so I smoke
I've killed some of my biggest deer dipping cop longcut. It's weird no dip no deer. I had my wife out 2 nights ago. She said there isn't gonna be any deer coming out tonight. I said watch, and I put a dip in and wow 10 mins later 4 bucks came out into a powerline cut. I'm telling ya it's my goodluck charm.

Put some Apple to the test today. Spot and stalk, open country muleys, archery. Got inside 50 yards on several today.
On one of my hunts I had my buddy film me from the tree next to mine. He was dipping and spitting. The deer actually followed the scent to the tree. Once at the tree the deer started licking the tree where his spit had landed. It was cool stuff and we have it all on video to back it up.
i chew just about everything, most of the time it is longhorn wintergreen(cheapest).i also i have had deer lick the spit off the ground and even eat the ones i have threw on the ground.Something i do is when i go out scouting in the summer i take a can and spread it around on the ground by my stand so that way when the season starts that is kinda of a normal smell to them.i dont know if it works that way or not but i do it any way.:confused0024:
yall gotta get on the grizzley wintergreen longcut train! 3 bucks a can, taste yummy. i wont be dippin in my stand because its my first season. gotta do the best a newbie can do lol
where i live longhorn is $1.81 after tax
chewing
Not really sure but I did shot a doe while my dad was smoking a cig. I think the only reason that may have happend though is because dogs were on her tall. I often wandered if there were no dogs would we have ever seen her.
my buddy dips the whole time he is hunting. hell he even will drink beer all night then get up and go sit in the stand pissing off his stand and he still kills deer. he got 6-7 deer last year and only two of those were with a rifle.
The first doe (deer)I ever shot was smelling my dip under the tree.
