How many deer do you all plan on killing?

I am going to go for 5 mature deer bucks or does this year that should keep my freezer full, last year I took 3 deer and picked up a decent 185 pound buck freshly hit on the highway, and today I have 4-6 pounds of meat left in the freezer with 2 weeks to go until season so 4-5 deer is all I need a year.

Does anyone else pick up the road kill,I have a police scanner on during the rut so I know when and where a deer is when a car hits it 70% of the time there is no major damage to the meat,I cant stand to see meat go to waste and dont hesitate to load up a fresh road killed deer.

I kill one deer per year, and feel lucky when I get it. This is because, to me, to kill more than one seems to be game hogging.
I say this not to inflame others, but that I started hunting in Minnesota, and there you are allowed one deer per year, no matter the season or method of kill (bow, rifle, muzzle loader).
I now live and hunt in Wis. and in some areas, here we are allowed to take more than 1 animal, though somehow it just feels wrong to me, given the population goals of my new home state.
As well as the policies of our DNR, in attempting to achieve those goals.
I will pick up fresh road kill if given half a chance.

We are allowed 5 each in Virginia but with me and my son we will take about 4 a year for us and then look at the cams to see what we need to do. I only have young bucks on cam this year so it may end up a doe only year on my land. Some years it cull bucks and does only. Just depends.

seth_turner_04 09-11-2010 02:20 PM

I'm gonna try for six deer total and four with the bow. Last year I got three with the bow and two with the rifle. If I get more then great. There's a lot of people I know who beg me for deer meat every year so nothing will get wasted.

Last year between me, mom, and dad we got 15 deer. Dad got nine and mom got one. I only kept one of my small deer that I shot last year and gave the rest away.

hunt12ga 09-11-2010 02:40 PM

Last year I shot a nice buck on Halloween and gave it to a lady at work who had been asking for a deer since I had some left in the freezer and had an additional archery tag and 3 muzzleloader/shotgun tags. Well, the 5 chip shots I passed on opening morning of gun season were the LAST DEER I SAW all season. The button buck my wife shot with a shotgun ended up being the only deer in my freezer last season.

I never PLAN on shooting anything, but I would really like to put at least one mature doe and a buck in the freezer this fall. Good luck to y'all!

I am getting my wife into deer hunting this year so I hope to get at least one deer apiece. I really hope to get one with a bow, blackpowder and rifle this year. That is my own personal grand slam. :)

I shot 3 last year but one got away from me. I really hate that and it has only happened to me twice now. I have scoped my blackpowder gun to avoid having that happen again.

lswoody 09-11-2010 03:32 PM

I hope to take at least one, either buck or doe with my crossbow. Hopefully I'll get one with my 50 cal. CVA rifle. And I hope to take a very nice buck, (8 pt. or better) with my 30-06. And as many big does as legally possible. We have so many does in my hunting areas and most hunters will not shoot them. I usually keep a few for my family and give the rest to friends, family and neighbors. No meat ever goes to waste.

WM Greening 09-11-2010 04:33 PM

Here in Arkansas this year we are allowed to tag five deer, two of which can be legal bucks ( legal must have both antlers shorter two inches or have three or more on one side of his rack). I tagged four deer last year, still have two in freezer. As always I say I'm not going to as hard as in the past but do. Good luck and good shooting.

We'll fling arrows till were out of tags and the freezer is full. I just don't like more than one at a time to cut up. Between the two of us we'll probably shoot 4-6 doe's and bucks if there big enough here at home.

Bayou 09-11-2010 07:21 PM

I'll take as many as legal, usually keep one for myself. I give all the rest away to friends or to the hungry.

Night Crawler 09-11-2010 07:24 PM

I kill 6 and the wife usually gets 3 every year. and my freezer is now empty, until today, the bow opener. took a doe at 5pm this afternoon, watched 8 more and 2- 2.5yr old 8 pointers from then till dark was a good afternoon, front moving in all natures critters were stiring

sussexhunter 09-12-2010 01:08 PM

a kajillion

mcraddock 09-12-2010 01:31 PM

Just one. And he's a dandy.

Hogs keep my freezer full and fresh road kill is a bonus. 'Hunter's for the Hungry' will get any excess and neighbors of mine get their share too.

Usually I take one or two deer on a state park draw hunt that my dad and I get drawn for every year (severely overpopulated). All meat from those go to my church which has a soup kitchen for the homeless.

NJ Camo Man 09-12-2010 04:05 PM

We have so many deer in NJ that most hunting zones allow unlimited does. NJ allows one buck per season type (i.e. fall bow, permit bow, six day firearm(2 bucks), permit gun, winter bow, muzzeloader), I will only shoot as much as we can eat. Hoping for 4 this year. Good luck all.

GRIZZLYMAN 09-12-2010 04:05 PM

Hopefully, I'll use all of my tags this year. I have five in one state, and I'm waiting to see if I get drawn on a hunt here in Texas. I ate through my reserve venison this year so I need a major replenishment.

deerslayer706 09-12-2010 04:34 PM

georgia allows 10 does and 2 bucks.....so thats my goal

*twodogs* 09-12-2010 05:33 PM

1 doe and 1 buck for me
2 doe for the venison coalition

Last year, all I got was 1 doe and since the economy was so bad, I gave it to the venison coalition.

kateraxl2381 09-13-2010 06:23 AM

I killed 7 deer last hunting season and my dad killed 1. We are as of now running low on deer meat we want the freezer full, so I'm goin to be letting the arrows fly this year to fill the freezer back up. At the very least I'm going to try and take 5 does and hopefully 1 good buck.

RenaissanceBiker 09-13-2010 08:13 AM

How many deer do you all plan on killing?
How many you got?

The limit is 10 of either sex down here. 3 does and 7 bucks, 10 does, whatever. 10 is the limit.

country_guy9734 09-13-2010 08:23 AM

call me gready but i usually get 10 or 11 a year. i am going for 15 this year with atleast 3 mature bucks. 6 with a bow. checked one off opening 15 minets. we eat allot of deer meat round here

blackhawk_archery 09-13-2010 08:27 AM

There is no limit on does here in Illinois but the buck limit is 2.

Arkitekt4040 09-13-2010 09:32 AM

This will be my third year rifle hunting and my first year bow hunting. I took 1 deer the first year, 2 does last year. My goal this year is 2 with a rifle and 2 with a bow. I ran out of meat really early this year, namely because we don't eat hardly any beef. We eat venison instead, and at 3 or 4 times a week it didnt take long for me to run out. Here in TN we can take 3 does/day and a total of 3 bucks. I highly doubt I will take a buck this year. I'm looking to fill the freezer!

Wow, things really have changed since I left Illinois. I *think* when I left (around 2000) it was one deer per tag, and you could get one tag for archery, one for shotgun, and one for muzzleloader. Sounds like IL has finally got its deer management problem worked out.

doetrain 09-13-2010 12:18 PM

Last year my goal was two Deer,I got a Buck and missed my Doe a week later. Last year I used my Bow the whole season, this year I have a Muzzle Loader added to my arsenal. I hope to get one Buck and one Doe,that is the goal I failed to achieve last year. If I succeed and accomplish this goal I will be a happy hunter at the end of the year and will eat backstraps twice as much as last year, yum, yum!

tight360 09-13-2010 12:42 PM

Plan to kill?

Will kill them all, but the amount depends on how many tags I have.:)

Sniggle 09-13-2010 12:51 PM

I have 6 tags at present, 2 bow, 2 rifle buck, 1 antlerless rifle and 1 muzzleloader.

My goal is to get 4 deer...1 for jerky, 1 for sausage, and 2 for a mix of meat cuts and hamburger. If I get more, I will give away the meat.

I also would love to get a nice 8-pointer to mount on the wall....keeping my fingers crossed and my bow well practiced.

fastetti 09-13-2010 04:56 PM

Im similar to Sniggle. My Father has the big freezer and loves deer sticks so we try and get a 100 pds of sticks and sausage made. Other than that a lot of ground and a decent amount of steaks. I havent tried to make Jerkey since I was 15 and that was 17 years ago so Im going to try and do that. Between my father and I, were looking for about 4 deer this year but have people who don't hunt but love to cook and asking me for a deer as well. Where I urban hunt I'll probably start shooting and decide when yo stop. I found out that they are bringing in sharpshooters next year to take out deer about a mile from my urban area. Looks like Im going to just start shooting does and see what happens.
