when to start mock scrapes?
 

Hey guys, i have heard conflicting stories on when the best time is to start a mock scrape. I was wondering what you all think? I have a scrape dripper and was wondering if i should put it out soon. thanks in advance for your responses. ps. I live in the mid atlantic area .

I am curious of the same question. If you don't mind I'd like to add also. Do you hunt them, and when how is the best way?

I certainly don't mind at all. I would also be interested in the answers. I have hunted them in the past without much success.

If you know when your pre-rut normally starts then i would hang it out then .Ours starts at the end of October. i live in southwest Indiana.Good luck to you this season get a big one .And don't forget to put you mock scrape under a hanging branch .

Here's what I USED to do......
 

and have had much sucsess....I picked 2 stands w/ the wind blowing correct during the rut. What I mean by that is, in Michigan where I hunt, the wind "usually" 1OCT - 1 NOV would predominantly blow from the SW. I would "not hunt" those stands, but, would "bait" those stands every day, wearing "doe in heat scent pads on my boots" (remember 1 OCT - 1 NOV). I would make "mock scrapes" starting 1 OCT thru 1 NOV freshening said scape every "other" day. When the wind changed (predominantly to the WEST and or NW (RUT), I would then hunt those stands. I got 8 of my 14 bucks this way. They followed the sent pad trail and got on the old scrapes nose down and didn't look up or around. My therory is, the scent was there, but not strong enough to alarm, and it set a pattern. GOOD LUCK! And:happy0001: BE CAREFUL!!!!

I'm switching cams to mock scrapes this weekend. Its the best way an time to get bucks coming out of velvet the 1st week in Sept.

I waite for the bucks to start scraping on their own. Then I find the biggest and baddest scrape and put a dripper over it as well as a licking branch above the scrape. Always wear rubber boots and rubber gloves when tending this scrape. I use a drag line and walk over the scrape and almost to my stand. Take off the drag line and hang it on a tree to pick up on your way out. The Bucks will tell you when to start hunting scrapes!!!:s4::s4:

i don't waste money on scrape drippers. kick a clear spot from under an over hanging limb and piss in it. put a camera over looking it and i'll bet money you will see bucks. i've been doing this for years. one night i had 5 different bucks visit a mock scrape that i pissed in.

Here in Kentucky I start making them around the last two weeks of October. I have used drippers with good luck however, last year I started using Ever calm and VS-1. I would bust up the ground with a old hand rack from the garden the then shave off some VS-1 into it with a stick. I would place the small stick at the back of the scrape. Next I place Ever calm on the licking brach above it. Deer hit the ones I made and real tore up ones I found that deer had made. The Ever Calm seems to keep deer from getting all nervous and such when comeing into areas I have it in.
