.243 Guys

What's your best Whitetail round? Just picked up a TC Icon tonight.

Thanks

my wife uses a .243 TC Encore 100 grain Win Ballistic silvertip, I shoot a .280 140grain Win same thing. both of us have never had to look for a deer

150 grain Nosler out of a 6.5 x 55 swede

Inside of 250 yards the 100gr CoreLokt work as good as any, I've killed 85 or so with that loading...For bean field deer the Federal Premium 85gr Sierra GameKing HPBT is very flat shooting and has more velocity for extented ranges...

About 10 years ago, I decided to kill 5-6 deer with each factory loading, they all worked...Just pick one your rifle likes...

I second the motion.

I like the 85 grain Federal Barnes Triple shock. Solid ballistics of the lower grain and probably retains more weight than a 100 grain through the deer. Expensive though.

95 gr. winchester ballistic silvertips in my wifes model 7

I wouldn't think that would work very well in a .243.:rolleye0011:

I've had good success with the Remington Express 100 gr. Core-Lokt's. Try a few different loads and figure out what works best in your rifle.

Western MA Hunter 08-25-2010 04:32 AM

I just use plain old Remington CoreLokt

13pointjomc 08-25-2010 06:26 AM

I use either Remington Core Lokt 100 grain or Winchester power point 100 grain. Either will put a deer down at long range. Good Luck!

Hand load for my daughter's 243 Win. Use 100 gr. Partitions.

Jwood 08-25-2010 07:57 AM

Hornady 100gr Interlock works well for me. I tried the corlokts but couldn't get them to group well in my rifle

The best round is the one that shoots best out of your rifle. Deer are easy to kill as long as you put the right bullet in the right place.

A11en 08-25-2010 05:26 PM

Mostly 90 grain Remington swift sirocco if I'm expecting shots longer than 200 yards. Otherwise 100gr core lockts

Mt.Man 08-25-2010 05:51 PM

Thanks for the help guys.

100gr SPBT sierra

StabyhounDogs 08-25-2010 06:06 PM

100 gr Corelock for deer and 58 gr for coyote.

Anyone try these yet??Hornady SUPERFORMANCE Ammunition 243 Winchester 95 Grain SST Box of 20

hometheaterman 08-25-2010 06:24 PM

I have two friends that hunt with .243's. One shoots Winchester Power Points, and has no issues dropping deer if he hits it well. The other started out shooting Winchester Power Points, but he later switched to Hornady 95 Grain SST's as he said he tried a few rounds and it did the most damage and did the best job on deer. These are not the Super Performance ones, but the regular one. The guy with the SST's has dropped several deer over the last couple of years with his. The other guy has dropped 2 that I know of, but those are the only two he shot with this .243.

Have had great success with the 100g Sierra GK. Just started handloading the 95g Nosler BT. Interested to see how they perform

Gunplummer 08-25-2010 07:05 PM

As some of the others said, you may have to try different brands to get accuracy. I have a 99 Savage and Winchester and Federal shoot unbelievably bad in it.(6-7 inch groups @ 100 yards) The Remington Core Lokt .243s shoot a 3 shot group you can cover with a quarter @ 100 yards. The others are way too hot for a lever action and make the bolt sticky when you cycle the gun. Anyway, I have done good on white tails with Remington .243 ammo.

Simple and easy statement, but holds true. I use the Hornady bullets for my 30-30... and they will kill every single deer within 200 yards, but they do not group as well as the CoreLokts I've used in the past.(in my gun)

Sometimes when you think you're not grouping well, it's not you, but the ammunition. Some shells do well out of your gun better than others, so for the best grouping results, it pays to try several different ammunition to see what is good in your gun.

Yeah, um... I don't think that's gonna work very well in a .243...

I also have the M77 Mark II .243 Ruger. Did a test with Rem, Federal, Hornady and Winchester silvertip 95 gr ballistics. Out of my rifle the silvertips held tighter groups at 150 yds and they put deer down easily. I don't shoot anything else out of my Ruger now. I use them for everything from groundhogs, fox, coyotes to deer.
