30-30

Who still takes out the old 30-30 when deer season hits? What the best round? Any pics of deer taken with the 30-30?

Thanks

azokie 08-23-2010 01:46 PM

i still take the trusty 30-30 out a few times a season usually bag one with it

bgcorn 08-23-2010 01:59 PM

I use my Winchester model 97 lever action. It gets the job done!

Looking to maybe pick up one. Any pics to help me decide?

I take mine out for an occaissional stalk. Mine is a model 94. Of todays batch, probably the Marlin is the most proven. The Mossberg gets good write ups. Of course there are plenty of Winchesters out there, but they are designed for open sights- mine has Lyman apertures on it.

garett12 08-23-2010 03:14 PM

My marlin 30-30 is all I have to deer hunt for a rifle. It kills them every year.I like the winchester 170 grain power points. The core lokts are good rounds also.

Night Crawler 08-23-2010 04:14 PM

I use mine in the thick brush, Win model 94. If I were to buy one today it would be the Marlin. I would just like to scope mine once in a while for stalking purposes.

salukipv1 08-23-2010 04:17 PM

I use 170grs, have thought about trying hornady's 160grs, but I have little reason to shoot a .30-30 at 200-300yds.

Don't use it much, but have thought about taking it on a cougar hunt...

Mojotex 08-23-2010 04:28 PM

My brother in law has used his 30-30 for about 40 years. It is his only center fire hunting rifle. He's killed many, many deer with this rifle. I know of none that we have failed to recover, and no more than the "usual" effort. He uses Remington Express. Not sure what grain bullet.

kingobeet 08-23-2010 05:15 PM

I love mine, it's a marlin, its my primary hunt'n gun.

caplock 08-23-2010 07:23 PM

I switched from a 30-06 to a 30-30 marlin 4 years ago and never went back, lever gun just fits me better. Never seem to shoot more than 100yds anyway. You can only kill them so dead.

pfcdixon 08-24-2010 09:29 AM

I use nothing but a Marlin 336. Excellent whitetail rifle.

Mt.Man 08-24-2010 12:51 PM

Thanks for the info. I'm really leaning twords trading in the 300 win mag for one. I've never shot a deer over 60 yards anyway.

GRIZZLYMAN 08-24-2010 01:18 PM

I have an old Marlin 336 that I inherited last year. I'm using the Federal Premium 170gr rounds. The only deer I shot last year was with it.

WM Greening 08-24-2010 04:19 PM

I have a Marlin 336 scoped with a Bushnell 3x9. I inherited from my Dad 20 years ago. Have shot at least one deer a year with this setup. I use 150 grain Cor-lokts. Longest shot was about 150 yards.

I still use my old Marlin from time to time. It was my first deer rifle and I've taken many deer with it. I've always just used the 150 grain winchester bullets, but sometimes I have used the 170 grain ones... Doesn't seem to make too much difference in the end results. I mainly use a .300 win mag now since my hunting situation has changed. What used to be acres of thick pines is now just a big field!

While it's not a sexy gun or round, I really like my Marlin 336. It's a very accurate gun and have always been impressed with them. I like how they are shorter and how you can hold them pointed down occasionally and the barrel won't hit the ground. The added scope is a feature I like as well.

For ammunition, I guess the round is sexy now because I use the Hornady LEVERevolution 160gr FTX. It's a newer polymer-pointed bullet rather than the round nose and the ballistics are superior down range. It makes it an easy 200 yard gun.

I'll be taking my Win 94 out this year. It's a .32 Spl which is similar to the 30-30. I've mounted a Burris FastFire on it and it looks promising (to say the least).

RugerM77.270 08-25-2010 12:32 PM

I still carry my Marlin 30-30 I killed my first deer with in the field sometimes. This summer I took mine down to iron sights and used it as a walk around gun. I am putting a scope back on it and a reduced LOP stock so my nephew can use it to take his first deer this year.

This is a hog I killed at the end of season last year. I shot a little Button head a few minutes after I shot the hog.

30-30 Contender. Leverevolution

WrackMaster 08-25-2010 06:17 PM

Haven't used it for years, but I dug it out of the back of the safe this year and decided I wanted to use it again. I camo dipped it and had a red dot holographic sight put on it. Model 94.

DannyD 08-25-2010 06:46 PM

Every time i have pulled the trigger on a deer using my 30-30, the deer expired. I used to use 150g Rem CL. Went to the factory Hornady Leverevolution. Now i handload the Hornady LR.

Only one (neck shot) dropped on the spot but none have ever gone more than 50 yards. The round just gets it done.

Marlin 336

FlDeerman 08-25-2010 09:38 PM

X'2 My 336 marlin 30.30 will be passed on to one of my Grandsons with the stipulation that it is passed on to his son or daughter. In my opinion the 30.30 is the most versatile rifle ever made.;)

30-30

I've also got a Marlin 336, had it for years. Mostly have used it as a walk around gun in our swamps. I don't sit stands much anymore and have taken numerous whitetails and hogs with this old rifle. I started out using 150 grn bullets until I tried a box 125 grn hollow points by Federal. I believe Winchester also loads the 125. I started hand loading about 15 or 20 years ago and use nothing but the 125 hollow point. Have never lost an animal or had a long tracking job. I load the 125 HP for a couple of friends and have made believers out of them, it is a great load.

The longest shot I have ever taken with it was 139 steps. My brother also has a 30-30 he uses occasionally and he made the same shot at the same time as I did. There was two does standing together in a field and we both shot at that distance and both droped in their tracks. Don't get me wrong, I normally don't shoot that far with it, but it was wide open.

I'll take my Winchester out this year. Got my nicest buck to date with it. I use just the general remington 150 grain. Did the trick then and since then.

PKnTX 08-27-2010 12:03 PM

Win '94 30-30.
It's the only centerfire rifle I own. Tried for years
to justify another, just can't do it because everytime
I shoot something with this thing it dies until it is dead.

Win 150gr Power Points get the job done
without being too expensive to keep
a few hundred rounds on hand.

robbcayman 08-28-2010 07:57 PM

I have a winchester 94 that my uncle gave me as a kid. I also use a ruger hawkeye 270 that's scoped. One day I take the 30-30, the next day I use the 270. I just love the old school feel of the 30-30.

huntingfool94 08-29-2010 11:50 AM

i shot my first 2 deer with a model 94 32.spl which is pretty much the same idea

Bfree 08-29-2010 01:37 PM

Still hunt occasionally w/my 30-30 Winchester Model 94. I inherited it also, it seems to be a common thing on this thread. I like the open sites it just makes things that much more challanging. Ive always used the Rem. CL 150gr but after reading this thread I may pick up a box of Hornady's LR.
