new gun help me out
 

Hey everybody....I'm sick of using my dads guns for deer hunting and am going to order soon. Went to the local dealer and i like the remington 700 series. What caliber will be better the7mm mag or the 30 06. I will use it for short shots where i live which are about 100yrds or less and also need it for 2-300 yrds out in kansas. Ive done a little research and some say the 7mm will ruin a lot of meat. Is this true? How much recoild does one have over the other. Only rifles ive shot are my dads 308 and 270wsm. I like the both of them just Ive heatrd good things about the 7m and the 06. Hopefully you folks can help a guy out and give me some input. Thannks

the 770 isn't a good gun because of the clip on it is horrible.I would say get a nice scope and a 30-06.The 7 mag is over kill for under a hundred yards.

The 700 is a good gun if you take care of it , it will last 20 years plus.

Model 700 = good gun

.30-06 = one gun big game hunter

7MM RM = long range big game hunter

My 700 is close to 50 years old and still shoots great. I like the .270, just a neck down 30-06 really. I got one of the camo rigs for my grandson for about $510 at Wal Mart a couple of years ago including tax. Be sure to plan on a quality scope, I would not get one of the combo rifle/scope deals as the scope that came on his rifle is basically crap.

Either of these guns will handle your needs w/power to spare.If all you're hunting is deer size game,consider the .308 or 7mm-08.These 2 will also handle those needs easily.Otherwise,one can never go wrong with an '06.

In my opinion the 30-06 might be slightly more versatile. Don't under estimate the reach of the '06 either 165 grain bullet leaves the muzzle in the neighborhood of 2000 feet per sec. Don't forget GOOD CLEAR OPTICS , the gun can't shoot 300 yrds if you can't see out there.
Of course it would be ideal to shoot and see what you find comfortable. For a deer,antelope coyote ect rifle if your a smaller frame and not looking for the kick of the 06 maybe try the .270

The Rem 700 is a proven design...Hard to go wrong with that..

Performance wise, there is very little real world difference between the 30-06 and the 7mm mag..

The 7mm is a little flatter shooting with lighter bullets, but unless you are shooting at very long range ( 350 yards plus) there is little practical difference..

The 30-06 will handle heavier bullets, which might be an advantage should you ever hunt bigger game such as moose or elk...

There may be more ideal choices for certain types of hunting, but the 30-06 with the right bullets is NEVER a bad choice for North American Game..
