243 or 270, new shooter..what part of town are ya in....new shooter i'd say 223, but your laws might make ya get a 243 or bigger..for 500 yards, a 22-250 is good, or go big and get a 308 or somethin

edited after i figured out he is the 14 y/o who has been shootin since he was 5

I would highly recommend a .243 youth bolt action or breech. Just make sure to get a quality scope. He will outgrow the .243, probably, and you can always upgrade the rifle and use the same scope.

I agree, .243 is a great rifle for beginers and old timers alike!:s4::s4:

My 14 yo grandson shoots a .308 with no problem at all. Took two deer with it last year. It really depends on the 14yo and what he can handle. Sounds like this boy could handle a .308 without any regrets.

if you're not shooting deer past 200 yds, you might consider a .30-30 in a Marlin 336 ... it's fairly inexpensive, accurate enough, and doesn't kick much

.243 is good

I've shot 3 deer with a .308 and I'm 15 right now. Unless you're a little guy or you're very recoil shy a .308 is a fine choice.

It's been a while since I was 14 but I know the two guns that I used around that age. One was a lever action 30-30 that I used mainly in Michigan for shots 100 yards or less. When I was 15 I made my first trip to Wyoming with my father and used a bolt action .270. I had been shooting since I was younger with .22s and .223s. I never had a problem with either and I was a tall drink of skinny water too! Sighting in either of these guns passed about 12 shots did get the shoulder a little soar but once they were sighting in I never had a problem using them for hunting. I think if you have been shooting a while most guns would work for you.
