shoot whatever you feel like. i've been shooting my 7mag forever, and have killed the vast majority of my deer with it. i'm not especially loyal to the 7mmRemMag, just that gun. my dad gave it to my granddad, and i got it when he died (when i was 5). i'm beginning to go out a lot more with the .243, the .30-30, and the 98K Mauser in 8mmMauser (the .243 because of the lack of recoil, the .30-30 for really thick areas, and the Mauser for the novelty). the point is, i'm not an especially big guy (5'10", 160lbs) and i'll shoot anything, therefore you should be willing to shoot whatever you can get your hands on.

Can't go wrong with the 30-30. I picked up a 7-08 for my son when he was 13 and he has had good success with it. Depending on your size, I would find the style of gun that fits you best and then look at caliber second. The right cal. with a gun that doesn't fit the shooter doesn't work.

Another vote for the 7mm-08.

My 7 year old shoots a 308 with 150 grains slugs. The recoil isn't bad. The hard part is getting a gun that fits. He's using a Savage Youth/Women and it's still a little long for him. The shooting sticks help with that a lot.

I'm a small person at 5'5", I finally found a rifle that fits my stature. I didnt need anything high powered since most of my shots will be at 100yds. I chose the Rem. 700 SPS Young Bucks Edition .243. Very comfortable to shoot.
